Okay. All joking aside. I follow what others have said. Stick with trusted dealers, and trusted manufacturers. I didn't know Kershaw had a bad rap for anything other than draining your wallet. And Spyderco is definitely the same way ;).

I really dont know where some folks get the idea that kershaw makes crap knives. all of them i have ever handled, were just great. Various people i work with or around hate Kershaw, but they seem to like gerber which i hate. I own 1 gerber and i only bought it because it was like $20 and it is my knife that i use to pry, and other things because i dont care if i break it haha!

It's good to know that a reputable community like this thinks highly of Kershaw because i love their knives.

My favorites:
Spyderco Military
Spyderco Paramilitary 2 (Very popular, and hard to find because it sells so well)
Spyderco Gayle Bradly (really great steel and knife)
Spyder Manix 2
Spyderco Manix 2 XL *

Zero Tolerance 560 *
Zero Tolerance 200

Benchmade:
810 Contego *
275 Adamas
581 Barrage
710

I would love a Sebenza! but that has a big price tag, kinda looking to start out in the $250 an!d under area, kinda work my way up. Right now my biggest want is the Spyderco Centofante memory, i just think it is a beautiful knife. I love the benchmades as well! One day i will have a sebenza though lol. any thoughts on Camillus? i have a Cuda, not alot of reviews on this knife, seems good at it's price point

Advice is this - be careful, its addicting ;-)

Hey guys and gals! As of late i am really starting to get into pocket knives. Knives are always something have interested me, so i figured why not start collecting them? I don't have any higher end knives yet. I do like alot of kershaw knives even though i have seen the bad wrap they get. I really like spyderco even though i do not own one yet, but i soon will. I know collecting is based on preference from person to person, but i would just like a few pointers, good manufacturers, maybe certain styles i could check out. thanks!

Most people carry cheep knives, so be care full who you let use your nice folder. Find out what kind of lock you like, for example I don't like liner-locks because my fat fingers will unlock the knife. IMHO I like the Delica for EDC. When I don't have to be PC I carry a Manix 2.

The cuda is one of camillus's orginial designs, they got bought out around 2007 so they are now made in china or taiwan:(
the cuda is a cool knife for the price but some of the new designs there coming out with are not the greatest.:)

Don't be afraid to try a new style of knife. I carried one handed folders with pocket clips for years. Then it suddenly occured to me I could carry more blades and only one knife. I've had a stockman or trapper folder in carry rotation for nearly 10 years now. I prefer a trapper, but my stockman slipjoint had each blade at a different edge bevel angle for different uses. Basically, don't overlook the "old man's" knives, like traditional slipjoints, Swiss Army Knives, etc. You'll eventually need an Opinel and Douk Douk too.

Also along with this forum youtube is also an excellent resource if you're just starting a collection. I learned everything I know about knives from youtube before I even knew about the forum.

I am not much into folders. Here are some brands & knives that you simply cant go wrong with.

BK&T/Ka-Bar--------------BK&T------Made in the USA. Ka-Bar----mostly made in the USA.
ESSE--------------------------------Made in the USA.
Ontario Spec-Plus, SP2, SP8, SP10, SP17, SP47, SP51, SP53, SP Kukri. ---Made in the USA.
BUCK---------------------------------------------Made in the USA.
Dexter-Russell kitchen knives & cleavers -----------Made in the USA.
Condor tool & knife--Nessmuk, Lochnessmuk, Pack Golok, Woodworkers axe, Boomslang. ---------------Made in El Salvador. High quality for the money. Need a little work on some handles & sharpness/profile of edges.

welcome! i wish i had this advice at the beginning. here is my little bit

get a jar and write your most wanted knife, money not an issue ( ex. strider, sebenza, hinderer, a custom etc) on it. keep putting money into it every so often and eventually when you have enough, you will have evolved as a collector and as a user. This way it wont seem like you are spending the money at all!

Goodluck with everything!

My advice: Do your research, buy used from the forum and have patience. Seriously, if you're going to use them, buy a clean used one on here for usually half to three -quarter what they cost new. If you don't like it, you can resell it for not much loss.

+100

Most of the knives sold by folks here on the forum are in great shape. But they usually sell very FAST. Once you get an idea of what you are interested in, check the sales threads here several times a day. Lots of turnover, so just be patient and something you like will surely come up.

You also need a strategy to smuggle all those packages into the house ;)

My advice: you pay for what you get. Don't be lured in by cheap or low prices. You usually have to pay for quality, but when you do you will definitely notice the difference from the cheaper knives.
