just got a Kershaw Skyline

All Skylines are 14C28N. They never had 13C26, the models were introduced after the switch.

I wish that were true, but according to an email I got from kershaw today:

Jake-
Your Skyline does still have the 13C26 steel in it.
We are gradually rolling out the new steel (started in Feb) and should have all of the knives switched over by July.

Thank you-

P.S. What's the specs on the barrage?

All Zings and OD-1s are 14C28N. The Skylines made before 1-2009 are 13C26.
Skyline specs from Kershaw http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=430&brand=kershaw

I was going to say the same thing. I believe the OD-1s & Zings were designed & always had 14C28N.

I also just bought a Skyline at Wal-Mart. This one came in a clam pack, but says it's 14C28N. It's also dated Jan/09.

I had an orange Zing before giving it to my son-in-law & liked that alot. The OD-1 seemed a little small to me & I like more of a forefinger guard on my flippers. Anyways, the Skyline's amazing for the price. It's about the same size & shape as my BM 907, but a tad lighter & not an A/O, but just as quick. Very good knife, especially for the $ & being made in the U.S.

Hi, this is my first post here. I used to like (and collect) knives, but gave it up about 10 years ago. Since then I was strictly a multitool guy (Victorinox, Leatherman, etc.) because I thought EDCing a separate knife was a waste of precious space and weight.

That is until I saw a Kershaw Skyline at wally world advertised for $35. Here is a stylishly simple, thin, and light knife made by a reputable manufacturer out of a named steel (not just some mistery "surgical steel"). At 2.3 oz it's far lighter than my Victorinox Centurion. I couldn't resist buying, and I don't regret it one bit. Kershaw Skyline is a lot of knife for the price, and it's my new EDC (along with a Leatherman Squirt P4).

My plusses:
- Good steel
- Conventional drop point blade, good for everyday stuff and doesn't scare people
- Light (yet tough) G10 scales
- Very grippy texture on the scales, it feels safer to grip
- Deep finger groove makes it nearly impossible to slip
- The flipper makes it really fast to open (after a short break-in period)

My minuses:
- Thumb studs are only useful as pivot stopper
- Super strong clip + coarse G10 = torn pockets

The Skyline made me believe in a standalone knife again, and suddenly I'm in the market for folders. It's only appropriate that my first post is in a Skyline thread. :)

The Barrage sounds cool... why is it not on Kershaws website? I guess I should have waited a little longer to possibly have gotten a February made Skyline. so I could have the new steel, but owell.

Hi, I guess you are right. Could Skyline have been introduced at Blade (June) last year? If so it makes sense.

I think there is no 13C26 in any Kershaw made 2009. Since I thought Skyline came at new years I assumed it had to be 14C28N.

Wal-Mart knife.

Yes, there were still some models being produced with 13C26 at the beginning of this year.

It's not a stop using this/start using that kinda thing.
Some models have blades made in advance and those blades have to be used.
Wouldn't be smart to throw away blades. ;)
By mid-year all blades leaving the factory that were 13C26 will be 14C28N.

Hope that helps.

The walmart blister pack specifically says 14C28N, would it be safe to assume that my Skyline is made out of 14C28N even though the blade is stamped aug 08? Not that the difference matters much to me, but if they give me 13C26 that's kinda false advertising.

Can anybody tell me who designed the Skyline, I' ve already ordered me the Damascus verison, but I' d still like to know who designed it.
For some reason I couldn' t find any info on that anywhere:confused:

IIRC, the Skyline was designed in house by Tommie at Kershaw.

Sep, thanks for the quick review and congrats on the Skyline. From what I understand, if the blade says Aug 08 the steel would be 13C26.

Your knife should have the 14C28N with that date on it. I've got a DAM1760. I'm going to send the pivot screw, liner, and clip off to Mack's Shootin irons and have him coat it black and while those pieces are gone I'm going to polish the scales and turn it into a "going some place fancy" knife. Now that Wallie World is carrying them with the new steel I may have to get one and leave it stock.

hey flashpoint- how do you go about polishing the scales? i just bought this knife yesterday and i was comparing it to my spydie calypso jr that has micarta scales. i like the smooth feel better and was wondering about making the g10 like micarta. also, has anyone else had a problem with the pocket clip? my clip is so tight i can't clip it to my pocket.

thanks

Take off the clip using a torx bit--T-6 size. Using a hammer, whack the clip a little--it will spread it out a little. If you do decide to polish the G-10, you WILL need a respirator. G-10 is horrible on the lungs, very bad stuff. Use sandpaper, or so I've heard.

The other alternative to a respirator is flooding with water. The water will keep the dust down. Smooth G-10 looks really good. Just use wet-dry sandpaper and work up through the grits until you get a finish you like.

I couldn't be happier with mine and it is stamped Jan. 09. It seems to be a little harder to touch up then the 13C26 I'm used to and I think it holds an edge slightly longer. Or it may just be a slight variance on heat treating 13C26. I'm so happy with it I had to go a head and place an order for a RAM with the blacked out blade this time through my oldest and dearest knife dealer. This time I should finally get one.
