Just got my Buck/Mayo 172 - Nice indeed but some issues make me wonder

I picked one up last week from www.knifecenter.com and I have been very, very pleased with it. It's very sharp, it has a great lockup, and the clip works just fine. It's snug, but not overly tight. I think think that my Buck/Mayo compares very favorably to every other framelock I have ever owned, including my Sebenzas. The only real giveaway that the Buck/Mayo is in a lower category than the Sebenza to me is the sharp finish on the edges of the handle. The Sebenza is very smooth and comfortable. The Buck/Mayo is comfortable, but one can tell the difference.:p

I just got a 172, and it is more than I expected. An awesome knife! Mine locks up about 1/3 and is not too stiff. The grinds are all even, and the clip isn't too tight. I can't find anything wrong with the knife, even though I used a magnifying glass to inspect it. I look foreward to putting it to use in the next few weeks. I normally carry a Microtech, which are some of the best production knives made, and this one measures up to MT quality. Buck definately has a winner.:) :D

Oh guys - how I wish to be able to say the same - hopefully soon - sent the knife back to Joe today.

HEY !

How many of you remember what happened with the Buck Sawby 531 ??

As I remember, Buck decided not to release that knife to the general public because of liability concerns of guess what: THE LOCK DESIGN !! As the story goes, if someone stupid tried to use it as a hammer and the LOCK failed, they might get cut and Buck might get sued ??

Turns out (most) of the Sawby 531's became the first Buck Collector "Club Knife"...IE 1 of XXX that wasn't held back by the company or a rep.

WOW. Here we are 14 - 15 years later with another knife, the 172 Buck/Mayo TNT that can't handle a "whack" test on a wood table??

Sounds like a bad RE-RUN to me.

A beautiful knife for sure and I hope they can iron out the problems with it. Sure glad I didn't order one. (yet)

Hope this doesn't give you guys at corporate nightmares.

Mine is about as good as it gets for a production knife. The blade is dead center, the lockup is extremely strong (sorry, but I don't WHACK TEST any knives... ), and the "action" is smoother than a Sebenza and many handmade knives. My only issues are the same as Bob Glassman's, and are somewhat more apparant to me, since I'm a southpaw. The framelock is VERY stiff, and I can't close it with my left hand only, but I can with my right. (I probably shouldn't be trying to close it with my left for "safety concerns"). Overall, the fit and finish are superb. The grind lines on my knife are symmetric, the blade is razor sharp. To Buck knives and Tom Mayo, a job well done:) !

After discovering the forums here (and getting the bug, or at least admitting I had it), I kept reading about the Mayo knives. Then seeing pics of the TNT's, I thought I'd lose my marbles without one. When I found out what they were going for, I was crushed. Then the Gods of Steel answered my prayers, and the Buck/Mayo was born. (*Cue the Angels singing*)
I received mine about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and mine is as perfect as I could want, and I can be very picky. Everyone who has seen it, knife afficianados or not have been impressed. It is my AMEX card, I don't leave home without it.
Mr. Mayo, thank you for designing "THE ONE". And thanks to Tom and Buck for making something as close to it as I can afford. Maybe someday I will be able to acquire an original. If not, I won't die unhappy.

Another 3 weeks since I sent by Buck/Mayo 172 back to BK one more time - with all the recent positive posts about the knife I´m really looking forward finally getting a "good" one.

whats the blade length on the mayo, i keep seeing different sizes??????

We are hitting our stride with these knives. I answered in the other thread on the Mayo. It has been a learning experience working with the Titanium however, Paul Naranjo, our engineer on this project, has dialed in the lock engagement and the action.

Our deliver bottleneck is the titanium handles and we are getting that supply line dialed in.

I am very proud of this product, the working relationship we have with Tom and Paul's work on the process.

much praises to CJ, Tom and the rest of the Buck crew. I just picked up a buck mayo and it is indeed an excellent knife. Mines was as good as i can expect from a production knife, solid lock, centered blade, no blade play. Great stuff. One small thing that annoyed me is the edges are a bit rough, they don't seem finished that well. This is probably due to production costs, I simply took the knife apart and rounded the edges a tiny bit with a 400 grit sandpaper and it's perfect. Thanks for making such a great knife guys!

Klause,
Not too long ago, I received a one week notice that I was deploying for Iraq as a Corpsman with the Marines. Being a bit of a swapper and trader, I was caught without a fixed blade on hand and a week to be ready to deploy. I went to a local knife shop and paid full retail for a Buck Strider fixed blade.
For the money, I had expected nothing short of perfection and like you, I had a few beefs about the blade. Enter Joe Houser and the Buck Family. :) Joe had me send the blade to him personally. Withing 48hrs, It was back in my hand and absolutely perfect.
My primary complaint had been with the grind (do a search and you will find my posts about everything) so Joe sent it over to Wild Bill (Buck's custom orders guy) and all was taken care of.
Rest assured that if the folks from Buck know of your problem and say they will fix it, IT WILL BE FIXED.
I can't think of another company that goes all out to take care of their customers the way they do while still surviving in such a competative market.
BTW, I just arrived back in country last Friday and the Buck Strider Fixed blade and 880SP that I carried for the entire push into Bhagdad never failed. They remained sturdy and 100% reliable throughout. (I think I made several converts withing 2/23rd Marines.
I can't wait until I get the money saved up for my Buck Mayo. That's next on my shopping list.
Enjoy your knife.

@Doc,

thx for your post and for putting your life at risk for us.

I have no doubt Buck will make it right - I have full trust in the people and the products - this is why I pre-ordered back in December with just some pics of the knife around.

It just kills you not having such a potentially fine knife "at hand" for such an extended period :(

Manji

Your little blue man is intimidating people with his informational sign about their ip address and the program they are accessing the internet with.

How does that work and would you mind turning it off?

Hi,

I copied the signature from another forum. All it does is show you your "own" IP it does not disclose your information to anyone else. It is similar to as if you were to go to www.whatismyip.com or when you run the command "winipcfg" on your computer. It just displays your own information. Everyone sees their own information not anyone elses. But since I have received a few emails regarding this matter I will delete it from my signature since I don't want to make people feel uncomfortable here.

Still waiting for my Buck/Mayo :(

All you guys shouldn´t be buying so many of those fine knifes and leave just ONE for me so Buck can sent it to me after I´m still waiting for a working one since day one back in March.

Klaus

Ok, seems like the initial probs have been sorted. So question is... Will there be a 3.75"-4" blade model? Thats what I am after:)

Aloha,
I am currently waiting for my buck 172. Since Tom has a hard time getting them I ordered from another source, found one for 179 shipped.
Anyway, I'm glad to read so many positive things about this knife.
I have a Mayo TNT that looks just like the 172, except it has a thicker blade. Tom marked the blade "prototype". I carry it around everyday and use it a lot and it shows. Function wise it is still perfect and is the best knife I have ever had. I look forward to getting my buck so that the prototype can be touched up cosmetically by Tom and stored for safekeeping. I would post a picture but am unable to on this forum. I have posted it elsewhere.
