I just got my first ZT in the mail. A 0566. When the knife is open there is a rattle sound like something is loose inside. It does not do it when it is closed.
Is this normal for this model? If it is I am not happy at all.

It's the torsion bar. You can take the knife apart and use a little grease to solve the rattle.

You could always take the torsion bar out if you like the knife. Flips fine without the assist.

This is pretty common knowledge on speedsafe knives. Its a very simple process of just adding a little bit of extra grease if it bugs you.

I guess I should have done more research. In hindsight I would have just gone with the 0550 or the 0562 to begin with.

The 0566 is actually my favorite ZT at the moment. I have that and an 0550 and have passed on 0560/0561 and 0801 on the way to getting those. The 0562 looks like one I'll love, but the 0566 is so great in pocket, in hand, and in use... I love the 1/8" stock blade and the ergos. When I got it, I figured that I would rotate folders. Instead, it wound up going with me every day until I got my TiSpine. I had a silly knife love moment this morning, so I actually have both on me today. I just can't leave the 0566 alone.

I would not say it is normal on a brand new one. I hear plenty of them rattle after time or after being taken apart, cleaned up and not regreased at the torsion bar. A new one I don't think I remember ever hearing a rattle on. We check ours pretty thoroughly before shipping and just can not say that is right.

I'd just take the bar out, the 0566 has a detent hole in the blade so it will flip just fine without the torsion bar. In my opinion, the removal of the assist bar makes a vast improvement.

I love my 0566. Give it a chance.
IMO here's what you should consider.
Best option: remove torsion bar...it's a better knife without it.
Second option: remove the g10 side scale and add a couple pea sized glumps of vasceline...or grease to the cutout for the torsion bar. This will permanently remove the rattle and it literally takes 2 minutes.
The 0566 is one hell of an edc knife.

Thanks for all the responses folks!
I have put a return request in to the seller. I am going to send it back and probably get a 0550 or a 0562.
I really wanted to like the 0566 but for this amount of money I expect the knife to function properly out of the box without loose parts.
I do like assisted openers. That is why I bought the 0566. Kershaw blew it on this design if you ask me.

It's not so much as a "design flaw" as much as it's simply an outlier that just didn't get as much grease in the speedsafe cavity in the handle scale. It doesn't rattle if there's a proper amount of grease. The knife will function perfectly fine if you wanted to take a few minutes to treat the problem, but it's your choice. Hope you like your next choice.

Sarge- referring to post #14.
I seriously doubt you would get many if any to agree with that. The 0566 is a favorite among the ZT folks here on this forum. Sounds like you were not sure what you wanted from the beginning...

I am sure many folks like the 0566. I see that most deassist the knife as well. As far as not being sure of what I wanted well.... Honestly there are a bunch of knives I want. :D
I have other assisted opening knives. None of them rattle. That is why I made the comment I did. I have a Leek and a SOG Flash 2. Both are inexpensive knives that do not rattle. I spend $140.00 on a knife and it rattles. So yea I am a bit perturbed. I guess I don't understand why ZT would make a design that requires a blob of grease to keep it quiet.
So I will get one that is not open assist.

Keep it and just grease up the torsion bar. The grease will keep it stuck down to the scale and quiet any other noise. Any AO from kershaw I've had does that at one point or another.
