Just got my first ZT in the mail. 0566, is this rattle normal?

I am sure many folks like the 0566. I see that most deassist the knife as well. As far as not being sure of what I wanted well.... Honestly there are a bunch of knives I want. :D
I have other assisted opening knives. None of them rattle. That is why I made the comment I did. I have a Leek and a SOG Flash 2. Both are inexpensive knives that do not rattle. I spend $140.00 on a knife and it rattles. So yea I am a bit perturbed. I guess I don't understand why ZT would make a design that requires a blob of grease to keep it quiet.
So I will get one that is not open assist.

I hope it's not a surprise or anything, but you should keep ALL of your Kershaw/ ZT assisted knives greased. It extends the life of the torsion bar, improves its performance, and it is even recommended by them (I forget if I read it on their website or in one of the little manuals, but I know I read that somewhere). Also, if you crack open your Leek, you'll see it has a little grease already. Your 0566 probably didn't have enough, is all. It's not because of the "design"... generally, anything with moving parts is going to need lubrication to run optimally. Also, I just read the last sentence in your comment and I wholeheartedly suggest the knives that aren't assisted. You'll learn to love them more than the assisted ones!

The rattling is not necessary the torsion spring but can be the stop pin as I have seen.

I just got my first ZT in the mail. A 0566. When the knife is open there is a rattle sound like something is loose inside. It does not do it when it is closed.
Is this normal for this model? If it is I am not happy at all.

I have not seen a new one rattle and I have handled a bunch of them. You can send it to me if you like and I will exchange it for a perfect NIB 0566. Don't let this turn you off to a great product, I will even reimburse you for your postage to get it to me.

Damn top notch fella

I know where my next KAI product will come from :)

WOW! Thank you I truly appreciate that! I have sent it back already though. Once refunded I am going to get a different ZT either a 0550 or a 0562. I will buy from you for sure. Thanks!

While I always appreciate the business, I really don't like to see folks turned off by things that should not have been and then accept it as normal, because believe me while it is often seen in used assisted opening knives, it is not to be expected in new ones, even though it is an easy fix. You have a great day sir.

Well I think that if you're going to get a new ZT, go for the 0562. I just got mine yesterday and I could not be happier with it. For what it's worth, this is the most perfect knife I've personally owned. Rock solid, centered blade, smooth action, flips like a dream, falls closed, yet isn't floppy like the 0560, and the lockup is about 30% out of the box. I know these seem like menial things, but most of the blades I've purchased have always been missing at least one of these marks. Mine also came ridiculously sharp, I'm talking toilet tissue cutting sharp. Mine is going to see a LOT of pocket time, and I'll probably keep this thing forever.

You do realise all kershaw/ ZT speedsafe designs use a high quality grease in the torsion bar cavity right? Including the leek you own.

Anyway, I hope you get a Knife that you enjoy.

Sending it back to China will be a royal pain. Spray some lube like Breakfree CLP at the blade/handle interface and let it run into the torsion bar. In any case it should not impact the function of the knife.

I'm sorry you got a poor example but ZTs 566 is one of my favs and have 3 never had any rattle. And Kershaw Guy that was stand up of you and I hope I can give you some business in the future ... its good folks like you that got me to finally join in the forums.

Best of luck with your new ZT hope you get a more solid representation of the quality and how well made of a product they truely are.

I'd advise against this method...the torsion cavity needs grease and nothing more.

Thanks JJ! Kershaw Guy is a stand up fella indeed.
I am not trying to be down on ZT. I know they make great products. I am just not going to go with an assisted model.

Different strokes for different folks, some people just aren't a fan of the assist mechanism. I'm not, I have a very small selection of assisted openers, and one of them I took the bar out of, so I can't say I blame him for wanting to return it.

John, actually I like assisted folders. I own a couple. I was just unhappy with this sample of ZT. I am pretty sure I am going to go with a 0562 once the refund clears. If Kershaw Guy has them in stock I will certainly give him my business. I do want a 0550 as well but the more I research the 0562 the more it appeals to me.
