I just got a GB SFA and im impressed. I will do a review soon, but I have a question for you guys.

is this gap normal?

Just looked on mine, I have that line there too but mines smaller. Im assuming its normal. Well see how many people chime in about theres.

I just got mine - my gap looks a little bigger than your - but terminates in a bend. I am assuming the hammer weld two pieces of metal together around a mandrel to get the eye of the axe head formed.

Just an assumption - but that is three for three.

I just used mine - made a PILE of kinding REALLY fast - MAN is it nice to have a nice axe. I am not very experienced - but I can tell the difference between a cheapie and this nice axe. It actually WANTS to split wood.

I had the same concerns when I got mine last year, but in checking farther, it seems it's part of the forging process and is not a "crack" as I first feared. Hope that helps what for me was a bit of a shock when I first saw it.

Thanks for the info guys, Im not worried anymore.
razcob, I got mine from bens backwoods, amazing service. I highly recommend.

Yeah, that's just the fold from forging.

And I'd totally 'second' a recommendation for Ben at Ben's Backwoods. Very good guy, fast shipping, great service.

You may of bought the last one. Ben's is out of stock. I may go with the Wetterlings SAW20H, which is similar in size and weight.

I've got that one. The size is great for me. The one I got has great grain, but the alignment was just slightly off (just enough to irritate me but not enough to affect functionality). The head and edge are great, though. Still worth the $50 for a user.

I ordered mine from Ben's It was in my hand a week and one day later - and that was because he had to wait a day for a Mora blank (that I also ordered) to come in.

Best prices - or at least similar prices - on the web - and over 100 dollars - you have free shipping.

that GB ax is cracked, you best send it to me for disposal.......

:D:p

ah seriously though, nothing wrong with tit. They fold the hot metal over to for the eye, every GB ax has that showing.

My GB mini is the same.

To date, it hasn't effected its' performance (& believe me, I've used it).

Kind regards
Mick

I don't know if this is pertinent or not. But I have a Wetterlings axe (I believe it is called the Hunters axe, it has a rounded poll) and there is no gap like on your GB. They may be formed differently though.

On a side note, Can any one tell me what steels are used by GB and Wetterlings?

Hi,

Got some more pictures yet?

I'm sorry, being impatient as hell, I just really like this axe! :D

Hey everyone, I spend the day using the axe, and its a keeper.
I will post more pics soon.
I got an email from GB and all of you were right, here's their answer to my question:
"This is normal and it's not a crack it's just something that appears in the forging process."
hang in there for more pictures and a review.
