Just got my gransfors bruks small forest axe!

mrappraisit, I googled wetterlings and found out that they use carbon steel. thanks for that info. I edited my question out as soon as I figured it out.
thanks!!

My axe had some small rust spots near where the strap rests. I called Gransfors in South Carolina and she said, that rust on a new axe was normal, because it shows the quality of the steel. WTF!!

Hector, how are you going to sharpen your axe? The Axe book mentions a puck, strop, and cloth wheel, but I am not sure which method is specific for a convex edge.

hey razcob, I've been using just some sandpaper wrapped around a rubber eraser using circular motions. I can get it pretty sharp that way, but if I want to get it shaving sharp I finish it with some passes on the white sharpmaker rods.
about the rust, I know that the axe is blued on the factory, but even with that mine had some rust spots. that's why I decided to sand it, and after i'm done polishing I will get something to do a patina or maybe blue it. still not sure.

bought one for my nephew when he made eagle scout from treemanknives.com. outstanding customer service, but i didn't look at it to see if there was a gap and i've heard no complaints from my nephew, who uses the heck out of it.

Nice Axe. I went with the Scandi Forest Axe. It was a little longer and has a little more weight but I still consider it packable. Just picked up a BRKT Bravo 1 from Marcelo here on the forums. I think these two will be a killer forest combo.

+3 on recomending Bens backwoods. Great customer service and his prices are fair as well.

Great GB you picked up. You've actualy saved yourself money by not buying several lesser tools before buying the GB.

buy something good once and use it for a long time, rather than buy a bunch of cheap things many times.

Hector,

Looks like we had the same maker!

I was impressed with mine, I've had it about 4 years now. Last January my blacksmith had one last Mini Belt Axe on his table and let me have it for $75.00, he said they where back ordered, I new it was a great price so I snatched it up.

I used it to trim the branch stubble off a couple new poles I cut for my Hunter's Lodge. I took a video of it but I'm still precessing it for YouTube. I'll post a link when it's done.

It's done, lame but done, I've just stared playing around with videos.

I don't own an axe of this caliber, but after polishing or blueing (or applying a patina) I have had good luck heating a blade up in the oven to 200 deg and applying a thin film of beeswax. Makes it slippery in wood and does a decent job of protecting the finish.

Just my .02

Put a shirt on man - you are killing me!

Ya gotta be more positive, I ain't wearing the kilt :)

It was in the 90s last weekend, it could have been a lot worse, not to mention the 50 lbs I've lost in the last 9 months :)

can't you download that axe book from the gransfors website? Or is it something more substantial than what they have on their site?
