Just got myself a Benchmade Vex (lots of pics)

Yeah, I know the price would go up, but I'd be willing to pay 20 dollars more. I'm fine with the steel, provided that came from a country with some kind of labor rights.

Me too...although the Made in China doesn't bother me as much. I'd be willing to pay a lot more if Benchmade offered an uncoated D2 blade in that thing.

ETA: Think I'll pick up 2 of these as soon as NewGraham has them back in stock. Stupid thread. :)

My hands are pretty big. This folder is really thick and beefy, and I have no problems opening it or anything. It feels comfortable in my hand.

The blade is pretty thin actually. Heres a pic of it up next to a Buck 112 and an Opinel No. 8

I just got this knife. It does feel very solid. I am looking forward to using it more and seeing how it stacks up. Also I wish it was made in the good old U.S.A. As I feel I have been buying too many things from China lately.

Enjoy your new knife. Reminds me somehow of the old AFCK / Ascent series. No wonder, considering both were made by BM and both featured the round hole.

Hello,

I am also waiting for my own Vex. It won't be long to get it, but i reserved mine. At this price, for sure it won't stay long in the shop!!!:D

The style of the Vex also reminds me of some previous models :
Emerson Benchmade CQC7
Benchmade Chris Caracci's AFCK
Spyderco Walker folder (1st generation).

But I prefer thinking it's the quintessential of the design:p

And I'm glad to see a Spyderhole on the blade of the Vex, cause the elongated round hole that Benchmade used to put on previously has never been as good as the original Spyderhole!!!

And at this price, I won't ask for more. I buy it and I EDC use it!!!

Take care,

Bob

I agree 100%. One of these with a D2 blade, titanium liners and drill for tip-up carry would be just about perfect. I don't like the clip on mine at all though. If I don't end up selling it off to (to pay for Christmas shopping) I will probably sent up sending it off to STR for a fat clip and tip up carry.

The design reminds me a lot of an older Terzoula knife, but I can't remember the name of it.

but I love that BM butterfly...

The steel is labeled 8Cr14MoV.

Which I'm assuming it has some Chromium and Molybdenum and some other stuff...lol. It's a very sharp knife right out of the box, and the edge is very fine.

Besides the "china" etch (why cant they just have the little gold sticker you can peel off) I'm loving this knife.

Interestingly that's the same steel (and made in China) as the Spyderco Byrd line. Hmm...

Close relative, not the same. The Chromium content is different.

I like this knife 200X better than any of those Byrds. The Byrd line is ugly. Looks like something you'd see on one of those shopping channels at 3am.

I'm more and more impressed with my Vex every day. I sharpened it with my Lansky system, and this thing takes a wicked scary edge and cuts like a laser.

Looks nice.

Too bad its made in China

We already covered that in this thread. The Vex is made in China. Lets move on.

Psycho,
It's been almost a week. Have you had a chance to use the blade yet? How do you like it?

Have you sharpened it yet? Any report on how good an edge it takes or how much effort to put it there?

Any comments on edge holding ability? Comments on same from other Vex owners would be appreciated.
Thanks

Dang, I really like the look of that blade- reminds me of my Mini Grip, but with a higher grind. The steel doesn't sound that bad, handle looks OK. If they made it with an Axis lock I think I'd have to have one!

The liner lock on mine is very solid. I have tried a few spine whacks and no signs of any trouble so far.

I use the blade every day where I work. I open alot of mail with it, cut zip ties and other kinds of everyday things like that. Usually I'll go ahead and sharpen a factory knife because I'm not satisfied with the edge, but the Vex edge was pretty nice out of the box. After a week of use, 200+ letters and a bunch of zipties, it only needed a little touchup with my Lansky ultra fine stone and a leather strop. I had the blade popping hairs within seconds. Easy to resharpen.

I am a freak when it comes to sharpening (been doing it since I was 8) and I hold high standards for my edges. It feels worthless in my pocket if it doesnt pop hairs. I havent felt the incredible urge to sharpen this thing because I've been pretty impressed. It's held a good edge and has good geometry, and has done everything I've asked of it.

For 40 bucks....this is the best type of knife out there in my opinion.

after reading more information ,I think it is made by southern china ,sold in china about 10 to 12 usd .

china china china....

This knife beats the pants off alot of US made folders in that price range.

Let it go?

I certainly have.
