Just have to vent

yeah, i definitely feel your pain sir. I have a strict "No, but i'll cut that for you" policy

my knives are NEVER loaned out. The only exception i ever make is skinning knives and then only when someone helps me skin MY animal...

That's why I carry 2 pocket knives.. My ZT0551/0560 for me and a skyline/leek for family/friends to use if needed..

Dang. That sucks. Hope it does turn up. If not a full replacement, perhaps ask him to at least pitch in some amount to help you offset the cost. And have him buy you a decent, inexpensive beater/loaner for future lends.

Sorry about your lost knife. You might think about carrying 2 knives like a lot of us do(me included).

I would never loan a good knife to anyone. I'll do the cutting for them.

I might have to start carrying 2. I already carry a knife, gun, extra magazine, wallet, keys, and cellphone. So I feel like adding another knife would be a little to much.

Tell him to cough up the coin!!!

Second that. Knife nut or not, that's f'd up- to lose someone
else's blade.

Only time I share a knife, and that's as rare as a freak'n
albino sasquatch
, is if I'm right there while they use it
and I make sure I have the knife back in hand before I leave.

All the same, thanks for the lesson.

Anytime glad I could help lol. As for him coughing up the dough. I highly doubt that is going to happen. I know he works very hard just to make ends meet. I really want to tell him to cough it up believe me, but I also know taking a hit like that will affect him a whole lot more than it will me. Don't get me wrong money is tight for me like it is everyone else, but as much as it pisses me off I can stomach it and hope it turns up. I went through everything we moved into storage today with no luck. I am pretty sure I will just never see it again and that blows.

Kudos on being the bigger man in this situation. I think you made the right choice.

Put a spyderco ladybug with your keys. You wont notice it at all.

Its not that its too high class for them to use its that most have no concept of what its really worth, They think $25 is lots to spend on a knife and that fact that it might be $250 or more blows their minds...

I have the same rule for foutain pens, most people don't know how to use them and wil just wreck them if they try. So I have a cheap (by fountain pen standards) pen and knife for loaners. They are still worth more than most people realize, as both are about $50 items, but at least its not agonizing when its wrecked, or lost.

Nail on the head. People generally have zero respect for tools of any kind, let alone other people's prized possessions.

There are people who like to buy the best stuff they can afford, and take care of and maintain their stuff so it lasts them a good long while. And if it fails, they try to fix it before junking it.

There are also people who don't give a rip about anything, and don't understand why you do. They use Bic pens and lighters, own $3 LED flashlights, and *if* they own a pocket knife it likely ran them $10-$20 at a hardware store. They beat on their stuff until it breaks, then toss it and get a new one.

Folks like this will never understand your attachment to a tool of any kind. To them, everything is the same quality: cheap junk that keeps breaking if you slam it against a wall, drop it too many times, or leave it sitting in a puddle of water overnight.

Well, you are a better man than me, I suppose. Good to know
you're able to take things into stride because these kinds of
things do happen now and then. Well, here's to hoping your
week ends a little better.

Thank, and yea I have gotten pretty good at taking things in stride. I always have something wrong happen no matter what it is, so now I just hope for the best but expect the worst. This is definitely one of those worse times.

Well, I am hopefully replacing it tomorrow. I found a good deal on one which is good, but still sucks I have to do it again. Live and learn right?

That sucks. I think your co-worker ought to pay for his mistake. It's only fair. Regardless if he is struggling as it is. The point is, he needed the tool to perform his job and he lost it. Stuff happens, sometimes you learn the hard way. We've all been there. You were nice enough to let him borrow your tool instead of his own, in order for him to make a living. Maybe allow him to pay it off in installments.

I think there is the partial issue of ignorance/naitivity. And as I applaud you for not asking him for money, I think it may be ok to subtly make him feel guilty so that he will NOW understand the cost of such tools, importance, and perhaps to better take care of other things. I don't think its fair to say it should be a "live and learn" lesson for only you; it should also be a lesson for him as well. Especially if you see a future as a coworker with him.

Those damn squirrels, and I do like that idea. If anything he will realize not all knives are the $5 ones you get at the gas station.

I mourn your loss. Bet it was squirrels, jedi squirrels.:D
