Just Obese...Revisited

Today (well tonight since I work at night) I went up and down a total of 45 flights of industrial stairs (activity during a lunch and a break).

People pay to go to Health Clubs to use a stair climber machine, but will use the elevator if there's a choice.

This is good exercise, did you raise a sweat? How often are you going to do it?

During shift changes the people who could benefit most from using the stairs always use the elevator. I work in a two story building. Parking is the same. It is a large warehouse-type building and a voluminous parking lot. The people who would benefit most from a brisk walk from their car to the front door always park as close as possible.

I try to do it every work day. Last night I did 50 flights up and down. Tonight either 50 or 55...I lost count on one break so I'm unsure of the complete number. :grumpy:

I do them on my breaks (15minutes each) so I can do 20-25 up/down flights in 11-14 minutes. Yes I sweat...but I sweat easier than most, always have. I hasten to add that such a pace isn't for someone just starting out. I built up to it when I drew a mental line in the sand to buy no pants in a larger size than what I had on at the time. Like most jobs I sit on my butt in front of a computer. I could take breaks with everyone else, smoke cigarettes, and eat cup cakes, but I can't afford to do that healthwise.

I'm down 30 pounds, or I've lost about half of what I need to lose. I started at about 240 lbs. and I was 209 on the scale this morning. I can't run very fast or very far, but I can do almost 3 miles in the time it used to take me to do 2 miles. The best part is no more shin splints when I do run. The best thing as far as my wife is concerned I don't snore any more.

I've had no problem sticking to Atkins, but there have been times I wasn't in Ketosis or losing weight and I can't figure out why. The Fourth of July is this week and I doubt I'll go off my diet. My plan was to take the weekend off and celebrate once I was under 200 pounds. I'm not there yet, but I'm happy with the way thigs are going.

How are the rest of you guys doing? I know several of you had started exercising and losing weight and others were getting inspired to start. So, how ya doing?

BTW, if someone had made me the same bet as Guyon had, 6 pounds in a month, I would have won. But, nobody bet me. :(

Good for you PhilL.
Best wear your big hat in November so I recognize you :D

Keep up the good fight pardner :D

I was swimming every day for an hour for a few weeks and training with weights, but work finally started, and after a 10 hour day pulling wire, I'm beat. I have been losing fat by eating healthier, but my I've been losing ground in terms of muscle growth. I actually just put up my weights, and it's like I'd never touched them the weeks before... it's going to be a long, uphill battle, but things like this thread (and a "before" picture) help me keep fighting.

Congrats on the continued success, and good luck to you and the rest of yall!

Wally, I'm hoping that by the Nov. show I'll be able to point to you and say, "I'm with Chubby!" :D

Peter, we have to look at this in the long term. You're eating healthier, which should allow you to keep losing weight, and hopefully provide you with better energy for those 10 hours days. All we can do is the best we can, and not fall back on the patterns that got us fat in the first place.

That "Before" picture is a great motivator. Anyone who is even thinking they may have some pounds to lose should take that picture. Then if all else fails, you can send that before photo to me and I'll put you on the Photoshop Diet. :D

I made it through the temptations of the 4th of July. I'm down another four pounds, 26 pounds to my original goal weight. I'm a little disappointed that I haven't made much progress with my running. I still haven't been able to reach the level of fitness of 2005. But, I'm getting regular exercise, I have no injuries, and I eventually will be able to run a couple of miles. I just need to stick to it.

I really am curious as to how the other folks that have posted on this thread are doing:

“Thanks for the post I've recently implemented some food cutback and more exercise..”

never.to.sharp
“Thanks, PhilL, I'm sure there are lots of folks on here(me, at least) who could use a little inspiration towards a healthier lifestyle”

T. Erdelyl
“Phil I gotta thank you, reading your previous thread and seeing your current one has made me decide to give Atkins another shot.”

Active Verb
“I'm going with the Volumetrics program.”

silenthunterstudios
“So, this morning, instead of my usual three egg and meat sandwiches, I only got two, and with the cooler weather, will be walking around the building today.”

loraksus
“Just started (this morning) biking to work, only 5km”

zenheretic
“Today (well tonight since I work at night) I went up and down a total of 45 flights of industrial stairs (activity during a lunch and a break).”

And particularly Guyon with his bet coming up.
“I made my weight on the $300 bet (so did the co-worker), so now we have a new bet to lose 6 more by July 17.“

Let's hear from you, who is doing what?

I've always been fat, how bad has varied over the years (was probably at my best when I was in gymnastics, but still looked fat in uniform, and even had comments on how that was embarassing for the rest of the team).

In last year though I've lost 30 pounds (almost to the date, as national competition last year is where my before picture came from), 20 pounds of that in last 4 nad a half months. All my friends in area here are dancers (ballroom mainly), so I hang out with great looking people. That's been somewhat depressing. back in start of March though couple people commented that it looked like I'd lost weight. Wasn't planning on it, just a side effect of 2 miles a day or so of walking to and from train station and to and from dance studio, and then the dancing itself.

That very day i decided it was time to lose the weight for real. Most of the pros (rarely any students, as most of us don't look like the pros) wear a "latin" shirt for rhythm dances. Spandex, and often open at the chest. I decided that I was sick of being fat, and I was going to get into shape where I not only wouldn't be embarassed to wear a latin shirt when I competed, but would actually llook GOOD in it. Impressing these hot women i tend to be around all the time didn't hurt that decision, of course. ;)

I'm not there yet, and it gets harder every week to lose any more weight, was stuck at 155 (I'm only 5'5") for almost a month, but finally broke past that last month. Still have a bit of a gut there, but it's going to happen, and not giving up this time.

Course, that all being said, sure hasn't been easy. still walk the two-three miles every day. Go into studio to dance EVERY day now, sometimes more than once, where I was only going in a couple times a week. I try to get in weight room 2-3 times per week. Just 2-3 sets of high reps, low weight, more to tone what's left than to lose weight (tahts' what the dancing and diet is for), but it's still exercise. I cut back severely on intake during the week, though I still eat whatever I wnat on weekend. I know this is making process take longer, but I also think it's one of only reasons I've been able to stick with it this long. That before picture is key to. Picture of sister and I at nationals last year, has prompted us both to get serious about weight loss. Nationals are coming up again at end of this month, and while I'm not done yet, going to have an "almost after" picture of the two of us, and pasting the two up on wall, both as encouragement and as reminder not to give up yet.. Keep with it guys.

This post is nothing without pictures!!!!!!! :D :D

Along with the biking, started going to the gym, swimming, etc. Work paid for a pass, but I realized a bit too late that their hours sort of suck (end at 9 on weekdays, 5 on weekends) - at least it is air conditioned ;)

Picking up a bit of weight actually - muscle, since I really don't use any muscles at work (computer geek who sits in a chair all day) and a fair bit has atrophied.
Feeling a lot better though, much better stamina, still have a pretty big gut. Working on it, but it's slow going.
Biking is a great stress relief though...

Heh, TJ, dinner final night of nationals is on the 28th, plan on getting the "almost after" picture then. the before picture is on floor of sister's locker at work. Once we get the second picture I'm gonna get a copy of both.

Wow amazing how a month can shoot by. Still doing stuff although, it is easy to see how I was gradually doing less and less again.

Guilted back into sweating. :D

One thing to remember is it takes years to build up the big gut, big butt to its current proportions, but it seems to be human nature to want it drop off to teenager proportions in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Gotta hang on to working out for the long haul.

That really is the truth. I have lost 30 pounds in a month, three different times in my life, with three different diets. Ten pounds in a month now seems very slow, but it's where I am in my life now. Not only has it been slow, the weight loss hasn't always been consistent. Right now I'm up a couple of pounds. I'm in Ketosis, but still heavier. I can't worry about it. I've got to think long term. Stay on my diet and push myself on my workouts.

I've set a goal as to what weight I want to reach, and that goes hand in hand with a level of fitness where I can run 2-3 miles a day. What I haven't done is set myself a time frame to reach those goals, just the determination that I will reach them.

I’ve always joked that one of the benefits of losing weight is that it made my penis appear larger. The downside was that weight loss also made my nose appear larger.

I just found out today that what i was joking about is actually true. That men gain an inch of penis length for every 35 lbs that they lose. Originally my goal was to lose 60 lbs, but I think I’m going to shoot for 70 lbs and pick up that extra inch. ;)

As long as you do not suffer from "Dickeydoo Syndrome." That's when your belly sticks out farther than your dickeydoo.

Cheers! :D

I'm looking to drop to 160 @ 6 feet tall. Right now I am well overweight at 210.

I'm trying to cut back and got a personal trainer.
