There have been plenty of survival shows over the past 10 years or so. Extreme Survival, Survivor Man and Stroud spinoffs, Man vs Wild and Grylls spinoffs, Dual Survival, Man Woman Wild, Naked and Afraid and Alone. While they are very entertaining they are also all pretty unrealistic IMHO, but it got me thinking. I've camped/hiked all my life and have found that lighter weight for all your gear is the way to go, that includes knifes. I used to bring a small ax and a small knife but eventually dropped the ax as there was always plenty of dead wood around most places I went. These shows are different than regular camping/hiking obviously. That being said the theme of most and the rules of the most recent are that you can only have one tool. Of course they always and wisely choose a knife. So I'm asking what one knife would you take to one of these shows and why?

Something midsized for me.

Most liky my SFNO le, which is great for both heavy duti, and finer stuff.

straight handle Battle Mistress

Because....Straight Handle Battle Mistress.

Thats what I would think too. My guess is that most on here will choose the big choppers though.

That is a big chopper. And I agree with him. Why? Because big knives can do big jobs and little jobs. Little knives can't do big jobs.

Chopper for me too...

I'd incline for a Randall Model 12, as the thin 0.020" edge really allows it to do everything.

But in reality I would of course go for something close to that in chopping, but with a hollow handle. So far only my RJ Martin Blackbird is a close match to a 12 in hollow handles... Maybe one of the bigger "no-RJ" Martin knives would be good... I would avoid rain-sopping leather sheaths, and blade-scratching Kydex: Eagle sheaths used to be the best, with hairy rolled rubber inserts... Now of course, like all truly useful things, they don't make them anymore...

For the most part you are right. But a recent post of a rat and a horse got me thinking. If weight is an issue I would have an ASH-1 if weight is not an issue I would have a infimandu and a ASHBM (preferably a B13olo.

picking from the Busse's I own, I'd say B10 LE or ASHBM. Both of mine are no choils.
If i was to get stuck with something smaller, The RMD in any combo, or SOB would be my next choice.

Satin RMD, because of all the time I have spent in the outdoors I have not ever found a need for a knife over 6 inches other than the fact they are fun to use. Also depending on where I was I might take a boys axe over a knife.

TGLB comp finish. Big enough for most things and small enough for most things.

Without question a 7 to 8 inch blade is the perfect compromise. Big enough to chop with, and small enough to field dress and process game! I find the NMSFNO to be such a knife, as long as it DOES have a Choil. Saw a guying cleaning a fish on You tube with a ASHBM, and it looked cumbersome and ridiculous at best, I own the ASHBM and love it, but as a chopper, not a one knife option, if I could take 2 knives with me, then I would definitely take the FBM LE and ASH-1

I've said it before and I'll say it again... my 'One Knife' is the original HHFSH with magnum micarta:

...at least of the ones I've owned which went up to FBMs. The only possible thing that might shift the HHFSH is a NMFSH, which I haven't been fortunate enough to try. I would be surprised though if even that could displace my HHFSH because the HHFSH just works so well for me.

Convex satin NMSFNO - equally capable of processing rodents or building a proper log cabin, and makes a decent spearhead.

If weight were a concern, I'd go with a no choil tankbuster. It feels righteously choppy, and if the edge were thinned, it could do finer stuff also.

For its weight, the SAR8 is a nice option:

IDK why this one has an elf choil... (?)
