Just One Knife

If we're talking one blade PERIOD...then skinny ASH-1 Fighter variant...

Reason: It fits my Medium hands very well, it's pointy, provides great SD options...just seems to be a well-balanced medium sized that can do a multitude of things well knife like the TGLB--just better, I prefer the thinner stock for sliceyness & I've already mentioned the point

If we're talking one FIXED BLADE + a folder...I'd go with a Big choiless BASIC paired with a Spyderco Chaparral

Reason: Love the Res-C for comfy factor when chopping/hacking, added length lets you "reach out & touch someone(thing)", additionally, the lack of choil maximizes sharpened length and you never can tell when you're gonna need another inch of sharp INFI in the bush...And the Chap could handle all the slicing/skinning of small game, mid-lock is most always reliable in folders

In order of preference:
Bolo13
1311
B11
B9/Battle Rat/911
B8LE/Camp Tramp/711
SAR squatch/8/7/6 or NMSFNO
Beefmandu

or maybe just a KDSH, the cutting edge one side & pick on the other could be mighty handy?

And yes, I'd risk getting caught sneaking a nicely thinned rat warden or scrapivore hidden inside the sheath, or my boots or my pants/pack somehow. ;)

I do appreciate the Res-c as I own three of them. But can envision the usefulness of a fairly prominent metal handle end for smashing things that might need that action. What you may ask? Not sure at this time of night, but would rather have it than the rubber end of a RC...;-)

I have never seen anyone on the trail with a big knife. I hear many people talk about it.... just never seen it.. Hunting camps sure. I have thought about throwing a Nalgene in the bushes before. Water gets freaking heavy. Almost everyone I know carries a saw.

I do 12 mile trail runs with a tiny pack (mainly water) and a big ole knife (NMSFNO) in a scout carry sheath. If I was going to be backpacking 20+ miles per day, I can still think of a lot better places to lose oz and lbs than the only sharp thing I need to carry.

Well said sir. I think I need to start running .....

What he said.
I actually have a basic7 set up as my survival knife right now!

Basic 8 for the win…. very lightweight, good cutting geometry, great balance & mass distribution and plenty of stock thickness to not be broken by hand. It would be about perfect for me if choilless with a more aggressive drop point & swedge grind…. ;)

Comp finish Hellrazor would do it for me, decent size blade, not too heavy. One of my favorites.

NMSFNO is my goto knife if it is the only knife I can bring. It is light enough for long hikes and tough enough to chop, split, baton and shave wood.

I found myself moving to lighter and shorter knife to lighten my system. The Infidu fills that space nicely together with my Felco 8 pruner. Garden pruner is extremely effective in clearing through secondary forest compared to using a machete. How I wish there is INFI blade for my Felco too [emoji4]

Of the knives that I've got. Toss up between Falkniven A1 and my SOB..... Until I get a ASH-1 (on the slim side)... Then it's the ASH all the way!

It all depends on where you are going, what you have available, and what is your skill level. We all need to practice our craft more...as one tool options are last ditch efforts IMHO. However, if I were to oddly appear on the next season of Alone via the History Channel...I might consider bringing a KillZilla, NMSFNO or TGLB Satin'14.

I'd probably grab my Hellrazor, not too small and not too big for a do it all knife. I'd probably grab a smaller balde if I could bring a hatchet along though.

In real life for serious wilderness trips I always pack a smaller knife (Infidu is my first choice) and an axe.
If it had to be one knife only I would go with my NMFSH LE - it is long enough, thick enough and thin enough if you know what I mean :)

Something midsized for me.

Most liky my SFNO le, which is great for both heavy duti, and finer stuff.

x2 for the SFNO LE. my favorite all arounder. If I could take two I would say a good machete and an infimandu.

A Basic 9 would probably be my choice - it's big enough for the big stuff and has the comfy Res C handle.

One and one only, I am sure no one will be surprised that for me it will be an ASH1. Any thickness will work but if I am choosing it would be .22 (if I can have only one) but the skinny or fat would be fine as well.

I have two .22s in the mail to me right now. They are the products of the "one only" quest (so I got two ;))the only difference is handle material and finish as I could not decide !!

Maybe it is my Marine mentality and carrying heavy loads, but a tool that can save your life is worth the little extra weight. Me personally, a multi tool, pocket folder for finer detail work, my RMJ/Bawidamann Ragnarok hawk and a fixed blade. For me the hardest part, deciding which fix blade to take!

What he said^ :)
