Just One Knife

Say Heah Boys and Girls, I would of been very happy with my Badger Attack Ergo and my Steel Heart Ergo, because their close to one of my Fav 2Knife carry, my Rodent 4 and my Rodent 7, I first got the Steel Heart Ergo and took a big gamble because all my Busse Combat were non - coated. And the S. H. E. came coated, But a short while later the Badger Attack Ergo came out and I was as happy as a clam. But then the Ergo Battle Mistress came out and I just had to get it. No regrets, I was pleasantly impressed not only does the Ergo Handle aids chopping, but when slicing too. I always felt this a little with my N. M. F. S. H. it's not as pronounced as the Ergo Set that I just got, but to me there is a little downward to the handle and I sort of feel that when chopping. Anyhow, now I just a new Fav'd Set that I'm really enjoying.

Have a few favorites.

The Battle Saw is everything a big chopper should be in a reasonably lightweight package. This one could easily be a one knife solution as it can do anything a big knife should be able to do, and it does really well at small knife tasks.

The RMD and/or JMD make for a sweet camp knife and make for a great one knife solution if you have no need for heavy wood processing.

Still out of all if I could only choose one, of all the knives I have ever owned/used, the TGLB does it all. Given that it can do all makes it a very well rounded knife for all uses, even if it does not particularly excel at any given task. This one can chop, baton, game process, kitchen duty, and be used for defense. I have used the TGLB for several years and have yet to find another do-all that has taken it's place. Jerry really made a masterpiece when the TG concept was born.

I would bring with a small knife, 3-5 inches, my personal choice would be the Steak Knife. I always dragged my battle mistress into the woods with me, than I had a child and switches to a smaller knife, less weight to carry, and have't needed it yet.

The Just One Knife discussions tend to revolve around the "survival situation" premiss. Here are my thoughts...

Large heavy tools allow one to efficiently make quick work of difficult tasks. Until one is cold, wet, tired, agitated, afraid, or otherwise in a survival situation. Full sized axes, long machetes, and big heavy chopping knives are hindrances when you are fatigued (combating their momentum negatively impacts your safety). Carrying a small blade is not really a hinderance in a survival situation, it merely allows you to do tasks in a different way. You don't split a 12" round of wood to get to the dry center, but you might split a 2-3" stick. For me, the Sar5 is the perfect companion. No choil or guard to get in the way. The 5" blade is plenty large enough for any outdoor task, yet small enough to efficiently process game. It is the only model of Busse knives that I own more than one of. And, one of them and a game warden are the only Busse Knives that I own that have seen any substantial use. I would gladly take the Sar5 over larger and smaller knives from my collection, given the just one knife premiss. Although, I would prefer to take two of them...

You bring up a good point, controlling larger knives when chopping at the end of an exhausting day gets kinda sketchy. However, IMO you can still use a mid-size knife(for some people, maybe even larger knives) as you would a smaller knife when you are fatigued.

My choice is the 2gSHe, for the same reason I chose to buy it as my first Busse; it does everything I need it to in a survival situation, both large and small tasks. It can chop better than any other knives I've had, but when you choke up it handles like a much smaller knife. Definitely my favorite knife size; many other people on here have posted things like the TGLB and NMSFNO , which I haven't experienced but imagine are similar.

I just put it to the test, going minimalist backpacking into the backwoods for three days after a 40-mile bikeride (long for me, and lots of uphill -- I was dead tired afterwards). It was a sort of personal challenge to be able to pull it off. The 2gSHe performed admirably, and kept me alive

I do have a 2gBMe on order, it may be put to the same test :D But really, I think the 2gSHe will continue to be my favorite and most used knife.

I love my Busse's, but for 1 knife my plan is the same as it has been since the 90's. My Randall model 18 survival knife. 7" blade, medium sized so it's a compromise but big enough to to big jobs and small enough to do small. hollow handle so you can turn it into a spear. Good knife for attacks. carries a lot of survival gear in the handle. If i had only 1 choice that's it. I cleaned my son's first deer with it so will be passing it on to him soon now that he's in boy scouts. Probably will get another for myself.

I bought it off ebay back in the day when you could get them at cost - $275.
