Just plain knives

Alright. I've got a very tight grained hammer handle with a split at the end that's just crying to be used. Either that or some curly birch, rescued from the woodpile. I know you use a wheel grinder - I'll need to think out whether to pick up one of those, or a little belt grinder. Gonna happen.

Post pics when you're done, it'll encourage others to try their hand, and that's a good thing. Right now I've got the urge to go grind something with a blade of around 8 inches and very pointy. Something "aggressive". ;)

p.s.: ahoy matey, thought I just heard the bo'sun pipe "Up Spirits", time to roll and go :D

Just about the right time o' day for a tot, I agree.

BTW, anyone else out there read the Patrick O'Brien novels about the Naval side of the Napoleonic wars? Lucky Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin have got to be two of the best characters every created in fiction about the sea ... maybe in fiction period. Adventure stories for men don't get much better.

Sarge,
POINTY AND AG.....BWAAAAAAAA!'You' have been a civee too long, you
sure you remember what that kind of blade is....pointy you can do.. jus don't
think you can do the aggressive part...better stick to 'nice'little thingee's!:D
THE DUCK!

Well, Duck, small or not, I doubt one in the ribs would do a feller much good....

From my perspective, better a small, vewy sharp one that you can get to, than a great biggun he can see coming. Rock on.....

Sarge, thanks so much for taking the time to block this out. I am very literal and clear directions help immensely. I usually always wear eye protection, esp. on the buffer and drill press, but not always on my little 1 X 42 grinder. Guess I should be consistent.

As to respiratory masks though, I have to say I have only used those when grinding a pile of rust off big chunks of metal, or when doing some heavy wood sanding. You wear a mask when grinding your files? Guess I figured the metal particles were so heavy I didn't need to worry about breathing them in.

Thanks again.

Ha, you just ain't got no idea Duck. Without any dadburn occifers around to keep me in check I've done run amok. I'm a wild shaggy beast, with red glowing eyes, half horse and half alligator, I mix gunpowder in my rum and fart cannonades. If I want to make myself a sticking knife, you'd best just be glad I prefer roast pork over roast duck. Bwaaaaaaaa. . . . . .:D

Sarge,
Ya done well "HOSS".....paring knives!:D Now ...can you remember from your military days...what a "WEAPON"looks like!! Cut all the nicey -poo & lets see if you can do it! HEE! The difficult you used to do & the impossible used to take you 5 sec.longer.So......can ya??OOPS,course "back then",you were younger & mean.Awww, sorry buddy, now you're settled & CIVILIZED!BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.(Sorry for the banter guys, just remembering a GUY(Sarge),that sent me a couple of special knives that I still have). He's now become city-fied,girley goattee, cute little FRENCHEE HAT...better stop...SNIFF.....probably can't even call cadence anymore or scare a recruit! So sad!!:barf: (INCOMING)!!!
THE DUCK!

Y'all don't let the Duck fool you, if I told y'all about some of the blades he's sent me, he'd be plumb embarrassed to have the extent of his generosity revealed. And, he's hooked up more than a few fellers going into harm's way with khukuris. He might come off as half crazy, but you'd be crazy to believe it. ;)

Now see here Duck, "civilized", "city-fied", "girly", I'll let them slide, I've heard worse. But "FRENCHEE"? Them's fightin' words by thunder. :p :D

Andy?

Due to a cut in state funding, or a realignment of budget due to the heavy costs of rebuilding after last year's storms, home care and the controlling medications to , uh, the "troubled" in Florida were greatly reduced.:(

Hence, Jim...The Duck...appears to be back in the cave, cackling over his stash of Durba Khuks, with one-legged dancing girls and, if I recall correctly, the Swedish Women's bikini team.

Don't fret. He never wanders far from his "preciouses."

Nice to see you, Duck.

SARGE,
FIGHTING WORDS.....from someone that "looks"FRENCHEE,little FRENCHEE goatee "AND" a FRENCHEE HAT....BWAAAAAAAAAAAA Fight!!
I DON'T THINK SO!!I Remember when you did swordplay & "LOOKED" like a Viking...now..... you prob. walk funny too!:barf: LORDY,don't p/u a Kukri,ESPECIALLY A DURBA....it has spirit & will cut you for looking as FRENCH as you do!:D
Kismit, you do UNDERSTAND....try & help Sarge,I'm really worried about him...someone told me he was taking French lessons...& then.....never mind..
I don't think we have to worry about him scoffing up K's....he likes "little"knives now!
THE DUCK!

Well, I can finally start the learning curve. Bought a grinder yesterday ... it might be a while before I've got anything worth taking pictures of though.:D

beautiful and inspiration as always, Sarge!

In a knife world that seems mostly composed of carbon fiber, G-10, thick blades, deep hollow grinds, cryogenic treatments, crucible metals, etc. your knives are a breath of fresh air to me every time I see 'em.

Many thanks for those kind words RWS. I've never had much affection for the slick, "professional", looking knives some fellers make. The more "clean and precise" they get, the more "sterile and manufactured" they look to me. I see a number of low-volume custom knifemakers at various gun shows, and they all seem to invariably slip into the same formula. I call 'em cookie cutter knives. :(

That's why I'm tickled with folks like Dan Koster. His body of work exhibits a range and variety that make his knives stand out from the herd. His hand forged ulus come about as close to a "pure" knife as I believe I've ever seen. A blade and a handle, and git 'r done.

My knives are relatively crude and simple, but they meet my needs and suit my taste. Isn't that what a knife should do? :D

Ray, a couple weeks ago I gave one of your knives (got from Steve email a few months back) to a good friend. He just called and told me how pleased he is with it! uses it as an EDC, kitchen and at work, said he strops it from time to time and it cuts like a razor.
He thanked me and I'm thanking you.

Dick
