Just received my first ever spyderco, a paramilitary 2 in S30V

How is the Onslaught? It looks like a good knife!

Its solid throughout but a left pocket carry only knife, which I didn't realize until after I purchased it. I may sell it just for that reason.

A beef thread? No, its not and I never meant it to be. This is a forum board, where people discuss things. Some good, some bad.

Yep, last spyderco I ever buy.

That about said it right there. No one like's the same things, so I understand how you could feel that way. But I don't understand why you are still posting in this room if you will never buy another???

If I got a Benchmade I had issue's with I wouldn't run make a post on there forum about it. And I sure wouldn't keep posting in there place after saying I would never buy another. Not trying to be rude, but I just don't get it.

Hey Mr. Bencher, you are poo pooing a Spyderco product in a Spyderco forum, so its just the nature of things that you might get heckled a little. Sorta like wearing a NC shirt to a Duke game. But there are some Spydie products that I don't dig either - its all good. But we Spydie guys are a notch above the rest, so you are welcomed here even if you don't drink the cool-aid.

Yeah, my brother and I argue all day long about my ford vs his dodge. You should see us, its hilarious.

I'm gonna make this my edc and see how I feel about it in a couple of days. I think the blade play might be me being ocd about it.

I've been a b/m guy for years so maybe this one has to grow on me a bit.........

Perfect.

I think you'll be surprised how much it grows on you. Its one of those designs that just works and needs to be used to be truly understood. In terms of blade play, try this, loosen up the stop pin screws a little bit then tighten the pivot screws on both sides until the blade play is gone and the blade still moves as it should. Then tighten the stop pin screws to your desired tension. The para 2 is quite sensative to adjustments to both the pivot and the stop pin so go slow and tighten/loosen little by little. I've taken apart my para2 many times and it always goes back together a little different every time. It just takes a little adjustment and it'll open and close almost with gravity and lock up like a vault with absolutely zero play in any direction. Alternately, since it is under warranty, you could just send it to spyderco and it will be returned to you in flawless condition, but honestly, they're probably just going to adjust a few screws like I just talked about. Either way, I hope you get it all sorted out.

You can really tighten that pivot down and it will still be very smooth. I torque all mine down as far as I can go, and I tighten all the screws in the handle as well.

there are lemons in every line in every company. that is the nature of the beast that is production knives. if it really bothers you, spyderco will probably make it right.

Yeah... I Have 2 Para2's And Don't Have The Issue You're Talking About.
And Plus.. It's Your FIRST Knife From The Brand And It's A Really Small Fixable Issue.
So You Get Your First Knife From The Brand And Decide Because It's Not 100% Perfect You Don't Want To Buy Another?

But I Agree You Should EDC It, You'll Probably Love It.

I was leaning toward "troll" when I read your first two posts in this thread, but I was wrong. I think you deserve credit for giving the knife a chance to work with you for a while before you make a decision. I think the Para2 is a really exceptional design, but it's not going to work for everyone. The pivot/play issue is not a design issue but a manufacturing issue...a small number of Para2 and Manix2 knives (which has the same pivot design) seem to get out of the factory with slightly oversized pivots, which may be what's wrong with yours. One suggestion to try: the Para2 sometimes can be "fixed" by slightly tightening the screws on the blade stop. There's no reason not to give that a try. Good luck and welcome. :)

Then get a box cutter if that's all that matters to ya.

I read this and was reminded that due to a company's offshore work rules, that are being enforced on midcon sites. - The only cutting tool we are allowed to use/carry on the job sites, are safety retractable box cutters...yeah it stinks.
OP- I think if you give the PII a chance you'll enjoy using it.
I know you're already sneaking glances of the " Ford blue" G10 scales & probably getting some thumb time flicking the blade open.;)
My mistake I thought the OP had his mitts on a Sprint M390 ...sorry

It's all personal preference. I used to be a BM guy, but lost interest because almost all of their designs incorporate the axis lock which doesn't really work with my lifestyle. I'm always doing dirty work or play and if you get any grit in that mechanism forget it. And then if you take it apart, they won't warranty it. So I stick to spydies mostly, easily operated with gloved hands, simple , functional designs .

Wow, you spyderco guys are would up a bit tight.

Try some decaff maybe? :p
LOL,maybe you could just send it back and exchange it for another one. What you describe is defiantly not typical for a para2.From all accounts they come pretty much perfect out of the box as did mine.I'm not a spyderco guy and I'd never drink decaff.:)

I like the knife after carrying it a few days but the blade loosens up ever so slightly over a days time. It has broken in very nicely now, feels good in my pocket, action is super smooth and cuts like a champ.

I like the fact that it is very light and doesn't slide out of my pocket when I'm on my back working on my cars.

Because it has a bushing pivot you can really tighten down that blade pivot and it won't seize up the knife. Take the clip off too if it's still in the tip down position so you can tighten the screw under it too.

Make sure all the other screws are tight too, especially the stop pin ones. If it still loosens up, then it's likely a defect and a warranty issue. Unless of course it's OCD like you mentioned because almost any folder will have slight blade play to anyone who is obsessive compulsive enough. Solution=fixed blade.

My Griptilian for example has slight side to side play if I have it adjusted so it's smooth to open. I have to tighten the pivot up pretty good to eliminate that play but I don't care, I still like the knife for what it is. A Para 2 really grows on you the more you carry and use it. I would send it in for warranty if it really does have some slop there that can't be adjusted out. Try handling one in a store if you can to see if it's different.

I'd try some blue loctite on the pivot theads after cleaning with alcohol. Not every knife is going to work for everyone. Kudos for giving it a shot.

Even if it does, spyderco should have caught it at the factory. When I spend over a bill for a knife, it better come out of the box perfect. :)

Really? You expect perfection at 100 dollars? I suspect you will be disappointed in a LOT of your purchases.

Perfection is rarely achieved in the production world. Of course, I have a very keen attention to detail, so I notice things that most don't.

Hey John,

A pocket knife that costs $100 should have no problems when you receive it. Of course perfection is not achieved at this price point, but I still expect the knife to function perfectly.

I did and there was very little locktite under the factory clip side which was also a bit too loose.

The knife is fine now and I'm ok with the purchase.
