So I just received my new PM2 today. I was able to get it because it was returned. It looks brand new but I have to think it's been used. How sharp do they normally come? It really won't shave a patch of hair off my arm. It also struggles to cut paper. How normal is this?

That's unfortunate. Sometimes that happens. I can't tell you if it was used or if it was dull from the factory.
I guess you could return it to the dealer or send it to Spyderco to get it re-sharpened.
I've only had 1 brand-new Spyderco but it came sharp.

The easiest thing to do is sharpen it yourself. :)

I don't have a sharpening kit yet. I will soon but I was hoping I wouldn't have to after spending $105 on the thing. How long does it take to sharpen it and get it back at spyderco?

Well, you did get a great deal already. Mine came very sharp, however. I do not think your experience is normal.

most come very sharp but i wouldn't think that means its used. it could probably be sharpened up in just a few minutes so i definitely wouldn't return it because of that. and you got a crazy good deal on it :)

If you send it to Spyderco not only can they sharpen it for you, but they can tell you if it is authentic, too. You'll get a lot of peace of mind for a little money.

Damn. So this is normal? I've seen people comment about how sharp they are but I'm just not seeing it.

Mine have all been sharp sharp sharp. I know you're disappointed, but it's a big leap to go from a few people saying they weren't as sharp as expected, to "so this is normal", for a knife for which thousands have been produced. Just sharpen it. You won't break it...

I agree, flat grinds are the easiest edges to sharpen in the world. Just get a piece of fine grit sand paper and but it under a hard flad surface. 400 grit and move up to 1000 grit, or you can go but a $10 whet stone. Or sharpen it on the back of another knife... or get a piece of ceramic. just remember, 20 degree angle or less depending on how you want your edge bevel. I buy my spyderco knives off ebay and they usually come surgery sharp.

This is what I'm considering. I'm just curious how long will it take and do you have to pay to have it shipped both ways?

I don't have anything to sharpen yet. I won't for another week or two.

You don't need to spend $105 on sharpening stuff...
Get yourself a norton india or SiC combination stone, or diamond if you prefer.
Its really not that hard to learn to sharpen free hand. I literally bought a stone, looked online as to the correct technique and went to work sharpening every crappy kitchen knife in my house.
I can now put phone book paper slicing edges on pretty much anything. I dont try for any sharper then that

I've never received a dull Spyderco. But at the same time I have never received one as sharp as I can make them myself. Frankly I do not expect a knife to come from any factory hair splitting sharp. Not cost effective at all. I expect to have to finish a knife the way I want it, no matter the cost. The last two Spydies I bought, a left and right hand Millie, last year, were sharp. Yet I was able to make them even sharper in a few minutes using an Ultra Fine Diafold.

But that's just me. Don't find it a big deal myself. Grow a pair and sharpen it yourself.

Instead of spending $20 shipping the knife to Spyderco for sharpening just get the Sharpmaker and learn to sharpen that knife yourself. Money well spent and that's a great knife.

I had two come like this brand new. Sold them and prolly won't buy another.

Simply because they came dull? If that's the only reason, I would just sharpen it myself.

I never received a dull Spyderco and if I did, I'd sharpen it. Actually I sharpen them anyway, so it's a non issue for me.

I've had about 6-8 pm 2's and a lot of other spydercos and they were all very sharp, however one did come with an incomplete secondary bevel ,stopped a bit back from the ricasso ~1/8".

If you're not happy with the knife you received, send it back.

As a buyer that is your right.

If you like the deal you got on the returned knife, dealing with the dull edge is on you.

Coming here to bitch about a dull Spyderco that was returned, and you admit to expecting that it was used, is in very bad taste.

Your lacking of sharpening equipment or skill has on bearing on this.

Right. Hey, how about some more life lessons please?

1) I wasn't bitching. I was asking a question.

2) Reading comprehension must not be your strong suit. The price was for a new knife from a reputable dealer. I got lucky and I was able to get one when all others are sold out everywhere because it was returned. Not once did I ever think it would be used nor did I "admit to expecting that it was used." You don't return something used unless you're a scumbag. I said it must be used because I hadn't really heard anybody say they received a new dull knife while doing my research. However, this thread has said otherwise.

3) Spare me on your almighty BS. God forbid I ask a question that upsets you sensitive Spyderco fanboys.

4) I'd still buy plenty of knives from Spyderco and plan on buying an Endura 4 soon as well. I simply asked a question.
