Just saw this new CSC Boy's Knife...

Neat looking knife. Much better sans shield, IMO. How's the pull on the Eric's Jack that came before this one? Light?

I don't know what happened on the phone but it might not be representative of the company. I've only interacted with Eric but he's a good guy. He's helped me out and wanted nothing in return (I offered). He's also worked together with us for this years forum knife. Maybe you got the wrong person on the phone at the wrong time. If I were CSC, I wouldn't be very happy with the dealer saying they were going out of business.

Regarding the shield... I actually like it better with the shield than with the etch.

I really like this knife pattern and materials, except for the engraved coin on the handle.

I had a similar experience with GEC the first time I called. It did seems as though I reached someone down in the factory though as it was noisy. I chalked it up to the individual not really being able to hear me. The next call I made I got Chris and it has been awesome every time after that!

I made on inquiry call to CSC a few months back and they were def not warm and fuzzy. Not rude......just not overly nice.

Chris was wonderfully helpful when I emailed them about a recent issue. It was fixed in an amazingly short time, as well. Can't say enough good about Chris.

I wouldn't allow this one experience to rule CSC out from your future purchases! They make a great American product and should not be represented by one employee who may have been having an off day. Heck, he/she could be disgruntled for one reason or another. I'd say if you continue to get the same service rule them out by all means. Give them a try!

I agree with this completely.

I couldn't be happier with CSC.....the only time I had a problem Chris took care of it immediately and even received a call from Wally Gardiner letting me know it was on its way back to me.......so don't let one call turn you off.......

Also this might have bearing on the confusion

csGreen River Tactical is a new division of Dexter-Russell, Inc., the largest manufacturer of professional cutlery in the United States. At the helm of the new division is Wally Gardiner, CEO/owner of Canal Street Cutlery. Hoping to enter the gun accessory market with this new category of tactical knives, csGreen River Tactical is introducing these two new models, a clip point and a drop point.

CSC or GEC? The Chris we're discussing that provided excellent service to several of us is at GEC. Does CSC also have a Chris?

If you got Wally on the phone, he can be very direct and no-nonsense. Great business-man, however maybe CSC receptionist is not a long term career goal for him.

My reasoning for commenting was due to what seemed like a veiled rub towards us forum guys/alienating a big part of the knife buying group rather than myself being insulted solely.

My phone call went like this

I called up and asked the man politely whether they were closing since I had seen a remark on knifeworks and on the forums.

"If someone else brings that up again I’m going to punch them in the face."

I apologised several times for what I realised was a touchy subject and and tried to help him find the site page in particular since he couldn't find it and but he seemed readily pissed that it was posted and forum guys had started calling about it. (Which struck me as odd considering this only puts their name on the map in media and us calling solidifies concern we have for a knife company that was 'supposedly closing.')

I told him I would write on the forum to clarify that they were under no means closing down.

He then felt it necessary to mention that "us forum guys are frustrating as hell."
'I don't get you all' and that "we lead a different lifestyle than others." (I'm not sure what that was supposed to imply) #knifelife

I'm a big fan of the ka bar coppersmith line and my statement saying I wouldn't buy another CSC may have been rather exaggerated.

I can imagine it being frustrating for them, but to make comments like that to a customer is just wrong in my opinion. He's only alienating the customer base by making those comments.

***Canal Street Cutlery Co. is going out of business, once we sell the inventory we will not receive anymore.***

"If someone else brings that up again I’m going to punch them in the face."

I think that's actually kind of funny. :D

I don't disagree with Bob (BigBiscuit) but honestly it doesn't bother me. Just earlier this morning another forumite implied that I had way too much time on my hands because I was interested in discussing knife shields. Forumites are interested in all sorts of details that don't matter to other "normal" folks.

True Jake. It doesn't really bother me either. I was only commenting from a business perspective.

True, that the dialoque wasn't very courteous at all, and would definitely put off a potential customer, especially one (or more) that could have direct influence on sales/reputation.

As much of a fan of CSC as I am, that was pretty disappointing to read how that went down. I suppose if all you do is SFO's for companies, it's no big deal, but when you produce products that everyday users are going to buy, there should be more honey than vinegar.

He who answers the phone is the voice of the company. Some smaller outfits don't remember that in the rush of day to day operations, and the wrong folks end up on the front line. Not the best situation.

This day in age, the internet (and associated forums, blogs, etc.) can have a major impact on any company or business. Positive or negative, depending on just a few people's reviews/experiences. For me, I would not even know the name Canal Street Cutlery if not for this very sub-forum. I research everything I buy on the internet and I'm 46 years old. I can only imagine what the younger generations do! If I had someone to answer my phone for me (heh), they would certainly be in that position because they are intelligent, amicable, unflappable. Even when different people keep calling and asking the same question.

I'm betting money it might be Mr. Gardiner that answered the phone and made that comment. While talking to him at BLADE this year he made a similar comment about online knife forums. I wasn't upset at it as I bet it does get frustrating for knife companies to deal with bad P.R. and rumors on the various forums.

Companies should be able to keep abreast of the times, or at least attempt. I don't care at all if some guy insults using forums, I just think it's idiotic business wise.

Canal Street Cutlery is a small business, a fraction of the size of GEC, which itself is not big. Just about all the employees work on making knives. There is no "repair department" for example. I have been told that when a knife is returned for repair, the guy who worked making that knife is usually the one expected to fix it, but still has all his regular work to do.
Phone calls can take someone away from doing their work. A bunch of phone calls is very disruptive so it is understandable that frustration develops.
I think everyone at CSC works 'flat out' trying their best to make a fine knife & successful business. They deserve our support and understanding. Remember, these are Schrade USA people who instead of being defeated by the closure of Schrade, started their own company, Canal Street Cutlery, dedicated to making fine USA Traditional style knives.
How about making a CSC the next knife you buy.
