Yep it is prickly pear cactus. We have tons of it around here. The flowers are in full bloom right now and they look pretty. The fruit is great but doesn't stick around too long. You can also eat the pads after removing the spines and the thick outer skin.
Thanks, I was thinking so. You should do a post on preparing some. I love studying that environment but can't afford the trip out there lol. If this global warming keeps up I may learn here. Your ecosystem (desert) are the only systems on the planet that are expanding at the moment...all others or stationary or shrinking.
