KA-BAR BECKER BK9 defective also : (

I would give away all my Customs before giving up my my original BK7, KBK2 and KBK9

i now have a Fallkniven Njord, and it's a FINE knife in every aspect. then again, for the price and the fact it's hand sharpened, should be.

if they made a KaBar produced Beckers the same way, they'd be DAMN FINE knives :) they'd also cost Njord prices. people would still buy them.

as it is, Beckers are FINE knives, and people buy lots of them. probably a LOT MORE of them than Fallknivens, yah? yah. a LOT more. OOOOODLES more.

everything to its place, and price, and people who appreciate their dirt time, sure do like to USE their knives.

manners tend to come after a few hundred or thousand posts ;) in the meantime, don't feed the trolls. they soon find the ban hammer if they are truly worthy.

B, i couldn't agree more with your wisdom there. well said.

greetings,

Please realize this is production. even custom makers have stuff slip out of their hands,

I am the most pro purchaser advocate ever but there is a time and place

if you're unit weighs 80k and needs a crate maybee.

But in the meantme i suggest a small peace full timeout.

just a suggestion mind you....

Good reason to grind off the jimping :)

I also find if you smash it thru logs using another log, it gets even more flawed and beautiful :)

Becker knives are the Best bang for the buck! Can't say enough good things about them.
Keep up the good work!

DITTO!!

My second (spare) BK9 just arrived, and after very close inspection, I found it to be flawless. I wasn't really worried, since I remind myself that these are production knives, coming from a factory, not a tiny custom shop. Even with a small flaw they'd still be the best value on the market. When they arrive PERFECT, the deal is even sweeter!

To those who are sitting on the fence, don't worry. Just buy a BK9 and enjoy.

I was just about to buy a cold steel recon scout for my bug out bag. but all the money for a knife I will hardly use. my outdoor buddies recommend a bigger blade, but the trailmaster. but seems too big and heavy. how does the bk9 compare to the cold steel?
I 've heard kar-bar is the best with 1095 steel.

The Trailmaster is a great knife, though I don't dig the rubber grip too much. Craton they call it.
Beckers are more appealing to me generally, and will perform the same, if not then better.

Mind you, though, their 1095 is not THE best, but definitely up there with the best (which IMO is RAT's 1095.)

Ya like that Rowen stuff huh? Me too! I have been super happy with my Beckers as well. The Ka-bar heat treat may not be as good as Rowen/Rat/Tops, but I can not tell a perceptable difference. All good stuff!

Then that begs the question: what makes you think that RAT's heat treat of 1095 is better than Becker/Ka-Bar's? I've heard a lot on RAT fans say their heat treat is better, but not one has shown any evidence whatsoever. I think one of them hears another say that and repeats it. As far as I know, there's not a nickel's worth of difference between them as far as how well they do 1095. Don't misunderstand me: I like RAT knives. I'd trust either a Becker or a RAT with my life, but I have never seen any evidence at all that one has a better treatment of 1095 than the other: they're both outstanding.

I guess that was my point. I did say "may not be as good". implying that it might, or might not be. If it Rowen is better...I could not tell. I was trying to convey that, but may not have communicated effectively. It would not be the first time. I am with you, Rat or Ka-bar Becker....they are both wonderful knife companies you can bet your life on. Hey I like Scrap Yard and the Busse stuff, and who could argue how tough they are...but I bet not many survival experts would pass by Rat or Becker for well thought out, proven knives. Real workhorses that have stood the test of time, have blade shapes and designs that right out of the box you could go into the wilderness and survive (with adaquate knowledge and experience.) They are practical, tough, and if you use them as knives will last any of us a lifetime. :)

Well stated.

They're made in America and they kick ass. You can't find anything close to a Becker without paying at least 2 to 3 times more.

Hey Guys....

I really feel I have to defend the Ka-Bar choice of steels.....As far as I know( I have calls into both Jeff and Mike) the RAT Knives are plain jane 1095 which is one of my very favoritist blade steels.......I am sure that the heat treat that Shon Rowen uses is as good as it gets...Shon IS that kind of person !!!!.....Ka-Bar uses 1095CV or CroVan which has a touch of chrome and a pinch of vanadium added.....Tooge is probably grinding his teeth as he reads this as he is VERY proud of his heat treat protocol and justifiably so (one day I got a load of grief from Larry Harley about how he THOUGHT Tooge was doing the heat treat on my stuff...Soooo I sikked him on Tooge and shortly thereafter I got a call back from Harley and he was as close to apologetic as I have heard him in over twenty years)....What Ka-Bar thinks and I concur is that the CroVan gives a toothier edge and somewhat better edge holding charachteristics....Mind you I have never felt "under edged" when carrying ANY decently made and heat treated blade made from the 1095 family of steels... plain 1095, 0170-6C, 1095 CroVan, or their close cousin CarbonV.....I THINK I can tell a difference, SOMETIMES with two blades, one in 0170-6C and tother in CroVan and I THINK I get slightly longer edge retention with CroVan but frankly I think you need to make up your mind about the RAT v. BECKER knives on some other basis, because in the field I REALLY, REALLY do not think you will be able to tell a dimes bit of difference....I have been splitting out fat wood and small kindling with an O170-6C NECKER that sits on the mantle every single morning of our heating season for THREE YEARS and finally felt I should touch up the edge last week....(I just reallised I need to swap that blade out for a Ka-Bar made one, I have every confidence it will go a longer distance).....

I LIKE my RAT knives and if they fit your hand better and their shape and style are more appealing to your eye(this last I cannot imagine But beauty is, etc.,etc)... you won't go wrong with Jeff and Mike's blades....Just buy a couple of mine to go with them, use them side by side and let us kmow what you think in a couple of years...I bet you will like both!!!!

All Best...

How about the Machax Ethan? :D

from my observations, those guys really hate each other ;) hah.

the "Machax Ethan 2010 Edition" - i like it. the first 500 will be serialized, hard chromed and then gold plated, and lovingly rubbed to a bright glossy finish, and will include a picture of Ethan and Tara :>

And there it is, right from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Personally, I love the way Becker/Ka-Bar does their 1095 CV. For me, it gets scary sharp, holds an edge very well, and cut's very well, too: What more could I ask of a tough as nails working knife? Throw in great design and what I think are the best handles around, and you've got what I think are the best hard use knives on the planet for the price...or ten times the price, for that matter. Okay, you may know of something better, but I dont.

My brother was in the USMC and he collects KaBar knives. I have a couple myself; one a real KaBar and the other is a Camillus clone. with these and other knives, I'm pretty experienced with 1095 steel. It isn't the best steel for any specific purpose, but it's probably the best jack-of-all-trades steel, which makes it one of my favorite steels. It takes a good edge, holds a good edge, and it's reasonably tough. KaBar's version of 1095 has always impressed me. I've long had the opinion it was a step above any other version of 1095 I'd used.
