Ka-Bar BK-16 Quality Control : UPDATE

Makes sense to me. That'll look sweet. Of course, you would have to put a new edge on the whole thing, versus using the original edge. I like it though. It wouldn't look too bad if you used the original edge, and left some of the curve on the end/tip.

Thanks. And Yea your right, would be a lot of shaping and grinding. I might be down for it tho. I will have to experiment with some designs. I know you always come up with some cool mock ups so if you have some ideas and want to share, please do! :D:D

That does look good to me. I'll be interested to see what you come up with.

Thanks man.

Man, just sucks I don't have more steel on this blade to work with.

This thread has taken a turn.................... for the better I think.......... Now its "Let's turn these Lemons into Lemonade!!!!!!"

HaHa.

Thank you all for your ideas.

I personally would be more interested in going with a modified sheepsfoot blade. Leave the original edge bring the point down till it's even with the top of the front finger groove... if that makes sense.

HaHa. Thumb grove anyone?? Might be cool right?

Speaking of sheepsfoot, here's a rendering I did of a modded 14. It was DerekH's idea. See what I mean about leaving a bit of a curve in the blade. This would work for the 16 as well:

Makes sense. Most sheepsfoot blades have the straight edge like the Wharnie, only the spine is different. I see what you are saying tho. Maybe make a modified Wharnie? I think I prefer the Look of that over the Sheepsfoot.

That actually looks really good Warrior! Man until you see these things, It's hard to picture it.

I kinda second Mooses idea on the dozier style drop point/sheeps foot. Very much like the Phat bob folder. I also really like the mods Daiz did to his. It gives you the benefits of a sheeps foot, while still giving you the belly. Its almost like a kephart with the tip brought down and a little more belly. Definitely would be a good overall cutter!

This thread is about apples, right?

Dex, good on you for having the resolve to, as you said, turn lemons into lemonade.

I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I have noticed some difference in belly profiles on my Beckers. Luckily it is nothing that can't be changed with a few minutes on a coarse stone. Doesn't affect performance for me, but it did make it tricky to sharpen.

yeah, leave the curve in. Else you'll have an absurdly thick edge or will have to re-grind the main bevels, which is just silly amounts of work. I'd lose the thumb gutter.

Nice one, Dubz.

Thanks Daiz.

Dex, you could always do this too. It's what you already have, I just left the original edge on it. Like so.

Personally, I wouldn't make the thumb divot that deep though. Also, this is pretty much what I was saying earlier, about leaving some of the curve on the edge.

I like the wharnie idea too man that looks wild amd would cut like no tomorrow I think, anyway good luck with whatever you decide too do!

Oh...I want this to happen.
Must find garage with tools....

Thanks Daiz.

Warrior, your pretty good with that animation and photo editing stuff!!

I think I would prefer to have a curved belly anyway after looking at what you did. And yea I was just getting a little crazy on the thumb divot. lol But really, go big or go home right?

Man, maybe I should mod all three BK16's? Maybe a recurve 16? Like a mini Brute?
The possibilities are endless.

I like the curve better too. It's sort of ESEE Laser Strike looking, with less belly. I would do it without the thumb divot first, it may look better without it. I was gonna render that too, haha, but didn't spend the extra time on it.

I think that looks pretty sweet. Maybe move the tip up just a slight bit, and probably not go with the thumb divot. I think that would be a sweet blade... It shall be named "The Lemonade" LOL!

The problem Dex, as I see it, is not Ka-Bar's quality control; it's that you own too damn many of the same model! See, that's why I only have one each of the Beckers that I own. My way, if one is "off", I can be blissfully unaware because I have nothing to compare it to (this is actually not true - the 5 that I won at the Northeast Gathering has a very obvious "wave" on the flats of the spine, but I ain't gonna look a gift horse in the mouth). Even dumping all of your duplicates won't help; the tiger's already out of the box and ignoring it won't make it go back in. I like this quote the best so far though:
I turned a FFG 16 into a Tweener Shortie with less blade width, but it was more about my incompetence with Ethan's KMG and less about a desire for a scaled-down blade.
Man, it took a while to make that knife anywhere "right" with stones. My point? If you stink at grinding, there are all sorts of possibilities. :D
I have a friend that refers to these sorts of things as "design opportunities". Commence to making "lemonade"!
