Ka-Bar Black Cutlass Machete or Kershaw Camp 10?

I have bought several at that large East TN knife store that will remain un-named. I bought their last Village Parang on my last trip a couple weeks ago. I love going in there, but seldom leave without spending at least $200. You can always buy cheaper "online".

Cool,I actually hadn't thought about there (I know where of you speak ;) :P ). It's a 2-2.5 hour drive from me,BUT I may actually be driving through there next weekend...good food for thought, thanks :D

I am sorry for some of the less helpful posts here for the most part this is a wonderful place filled with generous and kindly folks.
Now to the subject , if you have a chance to go to the store mentioned earlier that would be much to your advantage. I whole heartedly suggest you handle the items you are thinking about buying. Mostly because of weight and ergonomics ;swing the items around some and see how they suit you. I would say buy a Marbles machete or any of the cheaper well known brands and also the one you like just because it speaks to you, then have some fun until it feels like your arm is going to fall off.

Another suggestion for something heavier....take a good look at the Ontario Kukri.

Otherwise of the two you mentioned, I would go with the Kabar.

Thanks guys, great advice (which I will be taking :) ),and thebrain,it's cool, they're everywhere (and I must admit that I...gasp...have been guilty myself at one time or another, not HERE,LOL,and if I catch myself,I retract and try to help when I can :P )

Remember it is Christmas and people are buying and buying some more. A lot of people like the Ontario Kukri. If I were buying a Kukri, I would go for one of the Himilayian Imports versions. They carry gobs of stuff, but are lacking on high end things in many cases. They carry what sells. Prepare yourself for 9.75% sales tax. :thumbdn: I will admit that I do pay their prices and love to bum around in the kitchen supply area... so many goodies which my wife always likes.

Last trip was a Kabar BK-24, Condor Village Parang, a SAK, Kabar Dozier folder, and some kitchen goodies.

Well then....how does one know it's the wrong tool for the job if one doesn't ask...or if one does ask and then gets nothing but a smartass remark from some worthless jerk-off know-it-all?

Goodness gracious. That's quite the personal attack. So are the ones peppered throughout the remainder of your post.

I stand by my suggestion in post #8 that a Tramontina would the tool most suited for the task you asked about in your OP. Since you seem to be so anxious for me to expand on my opinion I will be glad to, despite being called a "troll and coward." A machete like a Tramontina is light, long, and thin. All three you want when cutting brush. It's not a coincidence...it is what it is designed for. You are considering knives that are heavy, short, and thick, and are built for chopping thicker wood.

Now, as I said earlier, if you are intent to get either of the knives you mentioned, you certainly are welcome to. But, as your say, you wanted to know the correct tool for the job...and that's a machete.

Of course you are free to disagree, but by how quickly you went "personal" when I gave you my opinion, it would seem you know your answer to your question, or only are interested on one answer to your question, which makes one wonder "Why ask?"

But, of course certainly feel free to ask questions, and I will feel free to answer!

Enjoy your knife.

Now THAT was helpful, and thank you. Yeah,I guess I kinda did :o ...Tell you what,if yer willing to overlook that this one time (meaning you needn't look for it to happen again),I's willing to apologize and start fresh, thoughts? (BTW,just re-edited that post, now if you'll excuse me while I scrape a little more egg off my face... :) )

Thanks,I hadn't thought about the holiday rush/sales yet (it woulda hit me about the time I got there and the shelves were bare,LOL,LOTS going on here, nothing to do with all the holidays :P ). I'll be going to visit and barring old injury flare-ups,will be mtn biking with a few friends out past Cookeville either this weekend,or the next,so hopefully I can get in there :)

Both are very good knives, but...probably not the tool you want for your task. As others have said, you want a machete...and IMO, one of the 18 inch ones(Tram, Imacasa, Condor El Salvador Machete, take your pick).

The DC - I'll echo what others are saying about a machete being the better brush clearing tool. Thinner & lighter, they swing easier for less fatigue. My Kershaw Camp 10 is a good chopper, but if I was clearing brush I'd go with one of my machetes. My usual go-to for the last several years has been a Condor Puerto-Rican. While I wish it was Condor's 1075 instead of 420, it has held up very well. I like the bill-hook like swedge at the tip. Another one I use a bit is the Condor Eco-lite 14" machete. But if I was not packing it, the 18" version would be my choice.

Thanks guys :) Yeah, the general consensus here is machete,so come payday I figure I'll order up a Tram from a link Marcinek sent me,for any of the heavier stuff back there,I'll use the BK2 or as an excuse to order a BK9 :P

Now you've gone and done it... mentioned the BK-9! AKA The King! Which I also think everyone should own.

So to recap this thread: you need to purchase a long machete and a KA-BAR Cutlass and a KA-BAR era Becker BK-9 and then take all three of those, plus your BK-2, and get down to business on that brush and wood. And take pictures. And then post them.

Shoot ~~ I would use my "MORA" Knife for no more than that to clear.!** Thought you really had some rough stuff.* GEEZ

Well...now that's different! If you are looking for the best tool to clear brush...then, in my opinion, machete up. But! If you, in fact, are just using the brush as an excuse to buy a BK9, then get that!

My usual go-to for the last several years has been a Condor Puerto-Rican.

I have it too. When I first bought it, I hated the wood handle. I pretty much just dumped it in my accumulation (no use stuff). Finally decided to just sand the handle and if I messed it up, I'd send it back to my no use pile. Well, it turned out great and it is pretty comfortable to use now. It is a very effective cutting tool.

I'd swear that mine is 1075? Black painted blade.... most of the 420's aren't painted as I recall.

It's 420HC with their UltraBlac2 coating (which seems to be something like a DLC coating) so it's not a powder coat like on their 1075 models--rather it's bonded right to the metal. The 420HC models I've had since 2005 still don't have a scratch on 'em. :)

hey I had a cutlass, stripped the finish off,and mustard/vinager, etched it,me and the wife, used it for yardwork before I got my kukris,it did the job.

Well,it's a bit of both,LMAO! I was always going to be ordering up a BK9,this was aside from it (an excuse to order TWO :sneakiness: )

By the way, be careful on that link I sent you (FortyTwoBlades' site), because are gonna go there and only want this thing....
