Which knife should I get,KA-BAR Short Black or KA-BAR Kraton Handled Mark I if I want a good knife for combat fight? I really like mark I but I'm not sure if mark I is a combat knife or not? My purpose of having this knife is only to use it for defending myself and I'm not a knife expert so I need your guys to help me get the right one.THANK YOU :D

Definitely the MKI. They share a handle (basically) but the blade design on the Navy model is far superior in my opinion. The steep sabre grind on the Short makes it hard to do some fine tasks without modifying the grind.

Yes, I like the blade design of Mark I too, very fine. Thanks for giving me an advice.

The MK1 is a Deck/Utility knife. It was never designated or designed to be a "fighting knife". Primarily used by sailors for general deck duties and as a boat crew knife. Some boat crew carried MK2s, but the MK1 was shorter, lighter and did not get in the way and hang up on loose lines as easily.

The shorties (125x/126x/505x models) are scaled down (roughly 3/4 sized) versions of the 1217 (reproduction version of the 1219C2/USN MK2 of WW2. The 1219C2 was designed as an F/U (fighting/utility) knife that was used far more for utility than for fighting. I have several of both knives and find them to be very handy for any task. There may be a learning curve as to how to use a shorty for whittling and other finer tasks.,

My preferred fighting/throwing knife?? The venerable Colt 1911. Capable of throwing several small, heavy dull knives at 850 fps at a rapid rate.

Don't get too caught up in utility vs. fighting. Mostly those differences are semantics and the techniques employed. No I wouldn't recommend a fillet knife for your purpose. I do find the MK1 a good general purpose knife.

I have a Colonial Mark1 and am awaiting the Kabar Mark 1. IMHO, get the Mark 1 you'll get more use from it, and the knife is more convenient to use than the KaBar Short Black. The Mark 1 is a far more utilitarian blade configuration than the Short Black.

You aren't planning on securing any beaches, are you? ;)

To Zzyzzogeton , Okay now I know that Mark 1 is not designed to be a fighting knife ,but can we used it to be a fighting knife? I'm not sure because I had never seen a real one before.

To Sac troop, did you mean you wouldn't recommend to use Mark 1 for fighting?

To Captain O .No, I didn't plan to secure any beaches with a knife. Haha

Either one will work. The Short is really just that. Smaller handle, smaller blade. 25% smaller actually. Too small for me. I never really saw the point.

The MK1 will cut and stab flesh just as good as any knife, but some work better. The balance in the MK1 is on the handle. Makes the blade dead, good for mundane tasks, causes less fatigue on the hand when repeated work is necessary.

The kraton rubber makes for a good grip though. If there is not a blade limit restriction in your area, there are some better choices from KA-BAR.

The original MK2 with a black Kraton handle makes for a good choice. BKT BK7 is another.

For another 5" and under blade, the BK17,

Have you seen the new EK44 that just came out?

Serious steel there...

To Moosez45 ,
Thanks to let me know that I can trust MK1 and for some better choices (MK2,BK7,BK17) I would say MK1's shape looks better for me .

The new EK44 is too long. I have to hide my knife under my shirt so the this one is not one of my choice man.

Thank you

It's not that the EK is too long. It's your choice of attire. You need a long shirt.

That way you won't attract attention. ;)

To Tradewater
I'm not going to wear that shirt man HAHAA, you know it will attract attention. :D

Those shoes more then that shirt.... hard to believe that's a man :barf:

On the up side... with a shirt like that, you could conceal a rocket launcher.....

The Mark 1 worked very well in combat, while the Short Black KaBar will not lend itself as easily to more of the daily tasks you're likely to encounter. The question that I pose is...

Do you want to use this knife for anything beside killing and/or maiming? If the answer is yes, the Mark 1 is the clear choice. If the answer is no, either knife will serve your purposes, but the Short Black would better suit your needs.

Does that answer your question?

If you want my opinion of knife fighting, go back to the last line of Zzz's post #4.:) Five inch blades can and do make very effective tools for a multitude of tasks.

To Caprion O
No, I do not need the knife to do anything else ,just only killing or fighting. But now I really think MK1 is much more beautiful and you said it will works well on fighting so I would choose MK1 for my purposes.

=Does that answer your question?
Yes, it does. Thankyou.

To Sac troop
Where's the last line of Zzz's post???

I like the Mark 1, It served well on the deck of many a ship up through the Vietnam Conflict. (Trust me, 5 1/8" of 1095 Chromium Vanadium steel thrust between the ribs, in the belly or into a larynx of the enemy will liquidate them in short order.) Come from behind quickly place your left hand over their mouth, and quickly thrust the tip of the blade inward at the back of the larynx. This will effectively liquidate the enemy combatant silently. No struggle will follow, as he will be too busy drowning in his own blood.

To Bigghoss , I'm not in america. The only time I would carry my gun is when to shoot someone.

To Captain O, I told you that I'm not going to secure any beach. I thought MK1 is a new model ,didn't know it already in Vietnam Conflict.

To GIRLYmann, It said the website is not available.
