KA-BAR Tech Talk

You designed it?! Well, you did a pretty good job with that HB, though I'm the wrong guy to ask, for I own three of 'em. So thank you!

As for the new grind near the choil:

IMG_4455.jpg

The upper grind is the new version, the lower one is the old version. In the new version the choil actually serves a purpose when sharpening the blade whereas the old one wouldn't allow that.

Toooj,

Any plans in the works for a heavy duty American made folder? Like a US Phat bob or like wise? Something that competes with the ZT's and spydercos?

Morales,

Okay...Yeah, The running shoulder. The contractor changed to a plunge grind to make the grinding operation easier. Running shoulders are difficult to grind consistently both side to side and also knife to knife. Also, as you mentioned. It's easier to sharpen the edge all the way to the choil. IIRC, we did that in 2008/9. I'm getting old so I need visuals to jog the memory.

clich,

I feel your pain. However, don't give up hope....That's all I can say right now.

Hope this helps.

Toooj, if I use a small round file to put some jimping on the thumb ramp of my Warthog, will that void KaBar's warranty? Thanks!

J.Davey,

Technically, yes; however, we like to think we're easy to get along with at KA-BAR, so if you have an "incident", we'll take care of it as long as you take reasonable care to not totally abuse the knife.

Qeth,

All 1245s have the partial serration. We are still working the bugs out of the new website so there may be some corrections to be made. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, Toooj! I'll just leave it alone. The thumb ramp doesn't really need jimping anyway.

Toooj;

I have a question concerning the scales on the regular and limited run Phat Bobs. The regular has polished micarta and the LE scales are.... soft. Not sure how to describe them better than soft/textured. How was the effect achieved in the factory? Thanks in advance.

the black ones have not been polished... you could, if you want, take them off, and put a very high gloss sheen on them, but then you'd lose the "grip" which i like.

BRL,

The Micarta finish is all about sanding. If you want the "softer" finish; you can rough up the surface with a medium to fine grit sandpaper. Keep moving up the grit scale ( finer grits) and you end up with a smoother, more polished surface. High color polish needs buffing wheels. Remember that Micarta is made from layers of cloth impregnated with phenolic resin. The " soft/textured" look and feel comes, in part, from the exposed cloth fabric.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Toooj. Does this mean that for this special run, 1000 knives were hand-sanded? Or was there some automated process for these?

BRL,

The handles scales were all CNC'd and then hand sanded on a belt sander. The higher polish scales then went to a buffing wheel.
Hope this helps.

Toooj,
My wife and I have been looking at getting some Cutco kitchen cutlery. Was just wondering if you were over all knife manufacturing or if they kept you in the Kabar side of things?

Hey Toooj...

Could KA-BAR make this knife...?

It is a Fallkniven "S1" blade form on the Mk1.

Everything else, including blade length (though maybe a little broader)... same/same.

Thanks Toooj.

redmech,

I spent my first 10 years at Alcas doing both Cutco and KA-BAR. As KA-BAR has grown, I moved to that side and Jason has taken more of the design role at Cutco. (He's a very capable designer) Having said that, we both are very heavily involved with the designs of both companies. Ka-Bar will be in good hands as I move toward retirement.

Garandimal,

Interesting. Nice photochop. Investigating.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas.

Toooj,

1) Are there plans for a 1245 plain edge in the future? I'm willing to buy prototypes ;)
2) Will there be any Big Brother variants? Say, 1245 BB?

Happy Holidays!

Qeth,

Sorry to say that there are no immediate plans for either of your ideas. We are presently preparing for SHOT in January. After that we take what we learn from SHOT and start designing. Who knows what will come up.
