Kamis need some supplies

And I remain curious about what size/shape of wood the kamis need, if I were to send a piece.

I would guess that it should be large enough to make a handle or two out of, but not so overly large or irregularly shaped as to making shipping difficult.

That sounds about right, but I'd still love to get some numerical guidelines, or at least "guesstimates." For example, I could easily pick up a "turning block" (say, about 2"x2"x8" or so, maybe larger) of a particular wood, but would it be enough?

Well, my hopeful steel supply fell through- It had all already been sent to scrap. :( I still have some wood, and I will pick up some "general shop supplies" this week. Danny, I'll get a box out to you at the beginning of next week.

Danny & Yangdu: I've got a couple of boxes of stuff here, from shop supplies (glasses, sandpaper, etc.) to wood (slab) handle material, to some tools & hammers as well. I'll put everything together in the next week or two, and get it over to Danny. (Can the kamis use things like screwdrivers & wrenches? I've got a bunch of extras.)

The only piece of antler I have is a small piece I use for capping my blackpowder guns, but occasionally a nice rack shows up at antique shops here. I'll see what I can scrounge up.

thx - cpr

Danny- I have placed an order for some shop supplies with Harbor Freight. It will be shipped directly to you. I am still planning on digging out my wood cache this weekend, but am currently delayed by our local rain. I'll send it along ASAP.

Dug out the handle wood!

Only about half of what I had would be suitable for Khuk handles, but it dawned on me that these pieces of wood have a unique legacy. They were all sent to me by Cantina members when I was experimenting with home stabilizing over 5 years ago- right before KatClaws (she was "Peeps" at the time) and I got married. I never got to play with the bigger pieces, and my improvised set-up did not survive my move to WV. :(

So, to complete the karmic giving circle of the HI community, these pieces will be sent to the Kamis to use working their magic- a far better fate than possible (likely?) ruination at my clumsy hands. :o

I'll be sending:

Three large "raw" branch sections of nice and hard, well-seasoned apple wood from Aardvark. I think there will be some very nice figure in these, and they should make quite a few great handles.

A 1.5 x 1.5 x 12" turning block of ironwood from etp777- ought to be good for a couple decent-sized handles.

A 63/8" section of an unknown chinese hardwood 2 x 4 from Bri in Chi. I could see getting two sword-sized handles out of this, or maybe four smaller sized ones.

I can't quite explain it, but I get a very nice feeling thinking about where this stuff is going and why. :)

its inspiring to see how hard people around the world will work to see a common dream come to life, I believe you guys are the essence of what this sites all about. thank you everyone who is trying to help these guys on the other side of the map, alot of character shown here.

I got a huge box of stuff from Brian M today (via harbor freight).
I will add my donations to it and get it ready to ship for next week.
I hope they use these air and eye protectors.
Its going to be a big box !

Danny- I doubt you checked the invoice, but HF emailed to notify me that ten pair of safety glasses were back-ordered, and a couple of other items were no longer available. I don't know if you'd want to wait for the back-ordered items before shipping or not, but thought I should let you know.

Thanks again, again for handling this!:thumbup::D

My dad just had the leaf spring on his toyota tundra replaced. It might be too late to get it back and its probably way too expensive to ship halfway around the world being so heavy but i was wondering if tundras have 5160 steel or if thats only for heavy commercial trucks?

Danny, kinda reading between the lines, I take it you have had a great response with work place safety products but I wonder about the actual blade making materials side of the request?

Also, if you have the chance, could you take a photo or two of what is going into the box or maybe just the unsealed box full of the donated items please?

Today I received an axe head in the mail. I put that in the box next to an old 18" long wood rasp. Those two items alone are enough steel to make 2-3 khukuris.
In the box:

50 breathing filters
several pairs goggles
several pairs face shields
3-4 rolls of industrial sand paper
4-5 packs of large sanding sheets
3 packs of assorted needle files
4-5 new large files
large bag of assorted leather straps/thongs
axe head
large wood rasp

Still hoping to get some handle materials, especially STAG.
But, the generosity of the forum is once again abundantly obvious. Thanks all !

I'm glad you got the axe head. I have the head off an old maul I'm trying to clean up and a strip of heavy brass as well. Thank you again for organizing all this.

Frank

is that really all it takes? because I have a steel-handled, rubber-handled hatchet (rather like this one), which I bought cheap at Army Surplus, and never used. (And I probably won't, since I have doubts about it's workmanship.) Would this be useful?

Would this be useful?

Here is my thinking- (worth exactly what you're paying for it ;)):

I might be way off base here, but I would send anything you think they might be able to use. Even if it cannot ultimately become part of a Khuk, they could still sell it for scrap or parlay it into a tool for their own use or for sale. The funds or trade value generated can help assure and/or ensure the obtention of what they really do need. I also hope a show of support from their overseas customers will boost morale and ease any frustrations. :)

Fair Trade and honesty: those are the things that drew me to HI in the first place.;)

Hmmm...they might be able to bring it up to their specs for use; I mostly think it needs heat-treating. But I'm always hesitant about asking for, or offering, anything; people get upset so easily.

THAT, I think, would go without saying; it's the whole reason I'm trying. At the very least, it might salvage their pride (pun intended): "Other factories make such crap, people have to send it to US to make it useful! Ha-ha!":D

Or maybe not......

Danny- HF just emailed me that the backordered safety glasses shipped today. If they can't make it into the first box, I guess we'll have to put together a second one, eh? ;):D

I think we have around 40 pounds of stuff to ship. I will probably send out several smaller boxes to keep costs down. At this point, we have enough wood for 5 to 10 knives and enough supplies and materials for every kami to last a long time.
If anybody would care to donate $ for shipping, that would be the most help now...
(Brian already did)
