Heat treated a katana today, have the video on my face book. it was that 1095 blade, quenched in water and oil. I am trying to import it to youtube or some such so everyone can see it.

Well... you accepted ;)

Cool video! It was a little hard for me to see the "oil-volcano chaser" part of it though.

Yeah, the old in out in out :jerkit: is pretty standard, none of that "motion of the ocean" side to side crap, it's big enough not to matter :D

You might have seen this one Butch, not sure I had it with me though.

I am going to discuss what to do about the warpage with some people who know more about katana and steel and stuff than I do, I might have to reheatreat it, not sure yet. Sure will post pictures JP! Once I get it sorted warpage wise, I will polish a window and get a sneek peek shot of the hamon.

OK here is some pictures.

Sam. I've heard it's difficult keeping the blade from not acting like a wet noodle getting from horizontal forge to quench. How did you avoid that?

After a count of 6 in the oil, you should be able to pull the blade out and do any straightening required with well gloved hands. you actually have a fair bit of time to straighten in this manner.

I do believe there is a time limit for mf and it needs to be at that temp in a certain amount of time but I'm not 100% sure what the time frame is.

Yeah I misjudged how long to keep it in the water before going to the 400F oil, was 6 seconds in the water should have been more like 4 tops.
