First, does anyone know of a good general information source on kattars?

Secondly, somewhere I remember seeing a picture of a kattar with a leather strap tied round it (and then round the user's wrist), but I can't seem to relocate it. [though Kareena Kapoor as Karubaki, the princess of Kalinga, in the fantastic Bollywood film Asoka (also starring Sharukh Khan) uses a kattar and she also has straps tied round her wrist]. Anyone know of a good photo-shot of this katar-strap thing, and/or a good description of it?

thanks again, Ben.

Hmm...I went back and looked at Asoka, Kareena just wraps a cord round her hand & the kattar:

cheers all (I do recommend the film too, BTW), B.

Thanks for pix. If they can keep out all of that infernal singing and dancing some of the Hindi films are quite good. I just can't handle it when in the middle of crisis a hundred folks break into song and dance.

I've had four katars on order for two years and am now convinced the only way I'll ever get them done is to go to BirGorkkha, stand over the kamis, barking every five minutes until they do the job.

Kareena is a kutie!!!!

No problem, Uncle Bill.

I actually quite enjoy *some* of the singing & dancing, if they're good songs--like everything else, when they're good they're good, when they're not.... Some of the dance routines are amazing and the actresses tend to change costumes about 7 times during a 5-7 minute song! But it is a bit different from European/American films (but I can almost always 'feel' a song coming up in the Hindi films).

I finally broke down and bought one off eBay. It looks good and the dealer seems nice, so hopefully it'll be OK. Would be interested to see an HI katar though. Is the kamis' problem that they don't have a model? Or do they just not feel like making them? ;)

I don't know why the kamis won't make the katars. I guess they must not want to.

I think I got burned out on Hindi films when I was living in Nepal.

so even though it is barely (intended) relevant, is the cord she wraps the katar with the same cord that was holding up her low cut leather....Oh, never mind

;) well I suppose you'll have to watch the film and see for yourself :D (I bought mine from a very nice fellow on eBay, and I see he has more copies: Asoka DVD). Seriously though, no overt nudity in Indian films (lots of 'wet sari' shots though ;) ).

somehow we've digressed from katars.... :)

I just had the thought that it might explain some of the singing and dancing:rolleyes: I can't dance, but it made me want to sing - there's even an old country ditty "Kareena, Kareena, where you been so long"......Or looking at the stuff on that blade, it might have been "Lorena, Lorena".....

Yes, it is 'semi-'relevant ;). I know what you mean...I actually find Indian actresses much more attractive on the whole than English/American/European actresses. There are so many lovely ones too (who are good actresses as well)--Kareena, Karishma, Ash, Madhuri, Manisha, Kajol, Rani, &c. (sigh)

'Kareena, Kareena...' sounds familiar, I don't get 'Lorena, Lorena' though.

cheers, B.

She performed preventive surgery on her philandering husband, whose unfortunate last name was "Bobbit". "Lorena" instantly became known throughout the country as a surgical procedure as well as a name. When I was being prepped for the peek into my heart (via the large vein in the groin) I came out from under the anesthetic for a moment. My nature is usually fairly fun-loving, but the stuff I was under made everything seem brighter. I was being shaved by a nurse who had a razor in one hand, and...well, I was being shaved. One of the others asked "Are you awake?" The ONLY thing I could think of to say was "Yes" and "Her name isn't Lorena, is it?". One was the wife of my endocronologist, and told me I held the record for funny doped-up patients for over a year. She still won't tell me the record breaker :(

The threads do seem to wander slightly.

One question about the Hindi films -- ever see the village girls in rags with filthy feet or cow dung laying around? One question about Indian and Nepali villages -- ever see the village girls with clean feet, nicely and cleanly dressed? Ever see a village with no cow dung laying around?

Check out this article on the BBC South Asia site: Indian surgeon accused of making porn beach films. "An orthopaedic surgeon has been arrested in India on charges of making pornographic films, and supplying American web sites with obscene photographs." No word on the amount of singing and dancing involved .:D

Ah, Walosi, I get it -- I just didn't make the connexion before, was thinking of Bollywood....

On the girls-with-dirty-feet front, actually there are some realistic Bollywood films, some in the vein of Mike Leigh. One very good one which is just out is Chandni Bar (Moonlight Bar), about beer-bar dancing girls. It's not set in a village, it's in Bombay (not surprisingly), but it's not the everyone-burstes-out-singing-and-dancing bright lights Bombay. Other than the dancing in the bar, which isn't Bollywood-style at all, there's no dancing and no singing....a very realistic film.

cheers, all.

Some 25 years ago I had a vasectomy, and when I was having the stitches taken out, I said something (don't remember what) to the nurse. She said, "Watch what you say -- you're in a VERY vulnerable position!" You can bet I shut up quick.

I think they switched katars!

The first and second are the same, but the third is different.

Does anyone else see this, or am I just crazy?

You're right--they did! Good eye! The latter one has a slightly in-curved guard and a slightly wider-blade.

Perhaps she had two on her (don't ask me where  ) and one broke....or perhaps they just counted on Berk and me and everyone else to be, er, distracted by some of the other things in the scene :p

cheers, B.
