Keep it Alive in 2025

This is all I've seen so far:

Thanks.
And cripes. 160 x $250 = $40,000.00.

I haven’t been following this thread much, since I never purchase a forum knife anyway, but hear me out:

Since there are a variety of manufacturers that offer custom engraving, how about we just agree on some guidelines for the wording (like must include “2025” and “The Porch”), and everybody orders whatever knife they like on his own. We can then start a thread to show them off, do trades and giveaways, explain why you thought it represents what you like about The Porch, etc. Everybody gets what he likes, but it’s still a shared activity, and gives everybody a keepsake.

We've been through this before.
Ok, not trying to step on any toes :).

Like I said - I never follow these forum knife threads closely, because I never purchase the knife. I was just trying to suggest a fun alternative, one that I might be inclined to participate in.

I can’t imagine that’s cost, there’d be a margin on that.
Still, I'll bet the Opinel option is looking comparatively good to Spark about now.

We've been through this before. It's not a Porch Knife, it's a Blade Forums knife. There's a reason that it's only ever carried the name "Blade Forums".
Though if we all got our own, we could call it a porch knife, maybe without anybody's permission.
Who would stop us from each ordering our own, then inscribing or burning or painting "2025 BF (unofficial)" on it? I may just do that.
I just ordered my Opinel #8 Garden knife. I think I'll inscribe it with Porchburgh Landsknecht 2025.

Well, yes and no. In recent years it has been a Traditional knife, it could be purchased by anyone who met a set of criteria that included participation here. Years ago there were Schrade subforum knives, the 2014 Eric's jack that was an alternative to the GEC being offered that year. And, of course the majestic Swiss Army Whine and Cheese unofficial knife. There have probably been others.

If it was a Bladeforums knife, that would open it up considerably. We could have an auto, a tactical Spork, a Smatchet, or - heaven forbid - a knife with a t**** s***!

I'm in I want to order a 77 stag clip blade, thanks in advance

I just picked up a 6 and a 12 at the flea market last weekend. I think an 8 is a reasonable compromise.

Wow, nice find! I think that No. 12 is probably from the 80s or 90s, and the No. 6 maybe a little later but pre-2005. The first two Opinels I bought (around 2008, I think) have that same logo on the handle as your No. 6, but the newer (post-2005) blade stamp.

I’ve been joking for years about a standard Opinel and a wood burning kit being an option for the forum knife, but I would definitely be open to an Opinel as an option, maybe something like the limited editions they do with interesting woods and such.

Thank you for the age estimate! I remember there were some changes made to the locks, but I couldn't remember exactly what they were or when they were made. The 06 locks open in two directions, and locks closed in one. The 12 only locks open. I thought they were probably the older style, which tipped the scale for me buying them, and I haven't had a chance yet to try searching for the threads discussing Opinel "improvements".

Why have we not even considered a SAK?

I'm not a contributor to the W&C section but I dig it haha
Candidly: because SAKs are A. generally available and B. not likely to increase significantly in secondary market value. Both elements are things that are opposite to what folks seem to want the GECBF knife to be. It's proposed by several folks every year that we move away from being YAGEC (Yet Another...), but because there are so many folks every year who were unable to get their hands on any GECs at all due to their lightning round drops, that it always ends up being a GEC. Now, it seems like the heat is starting to wear off of those, several recent drops took more than approximately four business seconds to sell, so maybe it's time to start looking at other options. A less expensive knife would be a net positive in multiple ways:

- Porch members could easily afford them, even those with limited knife funds
- The person/persons running the effort wouldn't have to be super financially extended/invested
- For some models (and depending on where it was purchased), there wouldn't need to be a showrunner at all, just everyone orders X knife with Y engraving on it from Z vendor, and they get them when they're ready, no waiting for a large batch to be done all at once
- The knife would definitely invite more use, as it would in theory be more replaceable
- Some options would be less expensive/more available for our friends across the Pond

So ultimately, what's more important to PorchenBerg? Rarity and resale value, or having a memento of being part of something that is a real joy for folks?
