Ken Erickson To The Rescue...

Elliott,

It's like getting two new knives from Ken. Not surprised that he did such a great job hooking you up.

Thanks, brother. I actually bought this particular knife at the Blade Show from a couple of other forum members at breakfast one morning. I couldn't resist the opportunity to add one of Ken's knives in a pattern I didn't have from him. It's the only knife of Ken's that I did not receive by purchasing directly from him.

It is unfortunate that this had to happen but in a way it's now as if the knife was originally built for me as opposed to having been acquired in the aftermarket. I couldn't be more pleased.

Elliot, That stag looks lovely! Ken really
did an excellent job changing it's "outfit"
I really like it's look now! The Ivory was
wonderful, But that stag is "smokin"
it looks perfect on that WT!
Enjoy my friend!:D

Ivory is some frustrating stuff alright.

Personally, I thing the stag is a step up

Good one Blues :D

Blues: Your post is the first that has caused me to leap to my feet, and run to my knife storage area. I have an ivory handled saddle horn trapper by A. Crenshaw. Although I've had it about 10 years the ivory was fine.

Twice a year I put a drop or two of mineral oil on the scales and rub it around with a finger tip. I let it stand over night before wiping off any excess. I do the same thing with other natural materials.

I use pure mineral oil, not baby oil which has added chemicals such as perfumes.

I have and use most all of the standard treatments for scale material...Ren Wax, pharmaceutical grade mineral oil etc...

...In this instance it wasn't an issue of neglect or poor storage or local environmental conditions but the ivory itself (and perhaps, as pointed out earlier in the thread by Kerry and others, the fact that the scales that Ken had received from the vendor were not properly manufactured in consideration of the run of the natural grain of the material). C'est la vie and all's well that ends well.

Really appreciate all the great comments and observations. It has been both instructive and edifying for both myself and Ken.:cool:
