Yep, I LIKE the steel a bit proud. Do the same on mine on purpose. Much better to err that direction than the other. And if you knock on something, you're not bashing the scales and the bolts.

I kinda wish Both styles were Proud of the tang.... easier to sand them Flush, than grinding the tang itself.

He probably would have opted for asbestos scales. I recall him being a fan, as most people were back then. But we know now that asbestos was “too good to be true”.
The hardcore fan would have asbestos scales
Bakelite would be just fine!
Took me a while to get around to it but here are the dyed handles. I'm really pleased with how they came out. One was diluted brown and the other was the same with some black thrown in. I also forced a white vinegar patina on one blade.I know people like to let a patina form from use, but with my slight OCD it wasn't happening as uniformly as I liked so I did the whole thing. It is still forming it's own patina on the parts that get contact with stuff so it will have it's own character, but the rest of it is protected from rust. It will mostly be a utility knife around the kitchen.Yep, I LIKE the steel a bit proud. Do the same on mine on purpose. Much better to err that direction than the other.
