I got this ivory knife pull from Kerry a while back. It works great and has saved many a manicure to date, but I have also found it’s a useful tool for unlocking bathrooms and bedrooms when the kids think they can give their ol man the slip. I carried the knife pull with me almost the whole day during a recent battle of wills with our daughter.
It also works great for working that toe jam out of that tight space between my last two littlest toes. I may need to send it back to Kerry for a fluff and buff after a while.
Not sure why the ivory is two different colors. Maybe one part was in the elephant and the other was sticking out? Hopefully one of the ivory putas here on BF can weigh in on this.
Edited to add: I was just looking at Kerry's new avatar and I think the knife pull was actually made from one of his buck teeth. Not sure if that is good or bad but that accounts for the pull smelling like a plastic cup filled with old Copenhagen spit.

Handle slabs are usually cut out of ivory lengthwise WITH THE GRAIN. I have a small chunk of ivory that was too short lengthwise(with the grain) even for knife picks, but I was able to slice some pieces long enough for picks so that the grain was perpendicular(transverse, crossways, etc) to the pick.
Some large pieces of ivory have golden bands(rings) when looking at a cross section, similar to growth rings of a tree. If you cut across these perpendicular to the grain, the slice will show long sections of dark and light ivory EXACTLY like is shown on Mikes' pick. If you look close at Mike's scan, you can see that the grain is perpendicular to the length of the pick.
Boy, I go away for a week, and look what happened to Kerry!!
Wuzzup my friend?? Have you started a rock band?? Opened a beauty salon??
We gotta keep a better eye on you!
At least it hasn't affected your knifemaking; that KHnutbuster is to die for!!
It's purdy dang sad when the knifemaker has to flaunt his own goods to get his thread off of page 3, anyway...
The nice thing about making 2 blade knives when ya screw up, you can sometimes recover your effort by just making a single blade knife. This started out to be a Wharncliffe Trapper but when I made a boneheaded move and mismatched the tangs..VIOLA!!!...a single blade trapper was born.
Black/orange paper micarta shadow pattern 3.5" Single Blade Trapper. My first one but stamped "4".
