Kerry Hampton Knives

Very nice Kerry! The Barlow is a true piece of Americana and yours does the pattern proud!

Yup, love the faceted, flat bolsters with the olde timey stamp, as well as the saw cut bone you did. Looks great. Congrats.

I'll tell you how I pulled it off. I had a hand stamp made to specs. by Everstamp that would be the right size for the standard Barlow bolster. I thought about making the liner/bolster integral so that when I stamped the parts I wouldn't have to worry about knocking the bolsters off of the liners but, I opted to make this knife just like I do all the others. I pre-stamped the WilfredWorks logo on the bolster pieces and then soldered them into place on the nearly finished liners. I used 1/16" pins to make sure I didn't have any surprises just in case I had to touch up the stamps...Tony's recommendation.

As it turned out, I did a good enough job being careful putting the knife together that I didn't have to touch up the stamps. The pivot pin is harder to hide on the flat-sided bolster but, with care, was able to pull that off. I learned some things on this one that will help on future projects.

Thanks for the encouragement. Anyone that is going to Blade and attending the Thursday evening CE'n/CF'n session in Tony's room will be able to fondle this and the others I will have with me. Oh yea, forgot to mention that this one is already spoken for.

Great knives, Kerry and congrats.

Your "Big W" stamp gave me a flashback to a classic scene in an old comedy some of us who've been around a while will well remember...

Whoa, how weird is that. That looks just like the view from Tony's back porch ;)

The barlow is too cool. The fit on the barlow looks even cooler.

Congratz to that great Barlow :) I really like the shape and the big bolster looks really great on that one :)

Great piece of craftmanship!!

Kind regards
Andi

GREAT job Kerry! That's about as good as it gets! Love
everything about it..... Well done!

That is such a stroke of tradition! Just a beautiful reincarnation of antiquity!!

Barlow discussion is good, so I am game, Kerry.
First a question - how long is it? Standard Barlows are usually 3 3/8" or a tiny bit more.
The proportions look very good! Bolster length seems just right.
One of the biggest controversies about marking Barlow bolsters is the answer to the question "which is the top of the knife?" There are many that read correctly when the knife sits on its backspring, and some that read correctly when the blade is open, edge down.
Which is correct? Will that question ever be answered? Why is there air?
Next!!:D

Dang Kerry, that barlow reeks of tradition. And the matchstriker on that Lanny's Clip is great.... looks really good with the patina on the blade. Nicely done.

Any of the Barlow's come out with a spelling error on the bolster I could get at a discount? :)

I think Kerry answered at least a few of those questions.

Kerry - WOW, WOW, WOW. Or to quote a former co-worker: my, my, my, my, my, my!

You're killing me, Kerry! The Lanny's clip with the matchstrike pull and then the Barlow. Two grand slams in a row! Makes me wish money were no object. I'd get myself to Blade and then make the new owner an offer he/she couldn'r refuse.

Good work, Kerry. It's getting harder and harder to wait for my name to rise to the top again...

What are the specs on the Barlow though?

Those are good questions, Charlie, and to be real honest I meant to put the stamp on the "correct" way but they ended up the way they are. When I was going through Tony's old Barlows for reference, most of the Barlows are stamped so that you can read correctly when sitting on the back spring. I think I only saw one of Tony's that was stamped "upside down" like mine.

The knife is Tony's standard Barlow pattern...3 3/8" This one is about a 1/32" longer but I'm not counting that part. :p
