Kerry Hampton Knives

The Blueing on the spring as well as the blade make for a fantastic contrast with the liners & bolster 🤩

Then there's that Spear and the Stag... You just got promoted from Master to True Master :D

Isn't it time for a GAW.....;)🤣

Thanks, Will

I'm not a master...just a guy that doesn't give up easily but, thank you for the complement. I am probably going to be embarrassed that I don't know this but, WTH is a GAW? :D

KnifeHead KnifeHead Certainly are a Master of your craft, the knives speak for themselves  Another hallmark of a Master is they don't go about boasting nor fishing for praise :)

Here's the bad news though... GAW is Giveaway :D What rock have you been mentoring under ?? 🤣 However, many moons ago I recall you did host a GAW and it was a Greenbone knife I think? And Green as in grass not as in CASE Red ;)

Thanks, Will

Kerry has been unbelievably generous with his handiwork over the years. IIRC he has hosted at least 4 TAWs over the years -- the 1st KHnutbuster, a swayback gent, another KHnutbuster, and a drop point BackPocket.

He's also generous with his time and knowledge. He's the one who educated me on swedges.

I forget more than I remember so thanks for the refresher. Maybe I need to do more GAWs. ;)

Among multiple concurrent knife projects,
One of the latest knife projects was different than the normal build-from-scratch fare. This time someone challenged me with a re-blading project. If you are unaware what that is, it is when there is a great old knife that is in very good condition except the blade is either broken or worn or sharpened to an ugly or unusable state.

The project knife is an old one, potentially 117 years old(give or take a few years) Wilbert lock blade hunter as advertised in the famous 1908 Sears catalog(pictured). This knife is colloquially known as a Lockback Saddlehorn and famously made popular in recent times by Tony Bose with his excellent custom reproductions. Tony passed away in 2019 and would have been cheering me on while tackling this thing, being my first work on a lockback knife.

I made a blade out of A2 tool steel using the dimensions of the original blade’s thickness, tang geometry, plus the part of the blade that was ground away in time. The closed length of the knife is 4 3/4”. The original blade is included in a couple of the images. The A2 steel’s dark appearance is a forced patina or etch.IMG_1784.jpegIMG_1785.jpegIMG_1786.jpegIMG_1787.jpeg

Lovin' it Kerry. That re-blade job is A+. I'm especially digging the point on it. Tip top!!!

I looked at the pictures first before I read your notes. I thought, "Wow, KnifeHead KnifeHead took that jigged bone to another level. It looks positively vintage." Now I know your secret...hahaha.

Arkansas Hunters!!!
No longer mine (sniff), I came across two of those Wilbert Saddlehorns many years ago! Some of Tony's favorite knives, I certainly saw why!!

My first custom knife ever.

The bone's been chipped and the inside of the spring has a couple of spots of rust, but this is one of my two most treasured knives. I don't carry her much anymore due to sentimental value and because I'm a big 'fraidy cat, but today is a special day so into the pocket she goes.
