Kerry Hampton Knives

Over the last month or so I've had a few conversations with Tony and Reese about how to recreate that old Sheffield look of the big-fluted bolsters. The problem is; how do you create that look AND hide the pivot pin because the pin is almost always in the flute to some degree on those old knives.

The stag IXL rooster comb in this post has the kind of look I am shooting for:

So, we set out to devise a method of peining the pivot pin to the point that it would meld into the pre-fluted bolster "gulley" and still have enough material to clean up the flute and prayed to God that the pin is hidden when we stopped beating on it.

The first attempt wasn't a complete success but it was a good learning process. Tony knocked the pin back out and we set about taking another stab at peining the pin another way. I cleaned the flutes back up with a file and sanded/polished it on out.

Here's what we have...a stag Lanny's Clip that has somewhat of the old Sheffield look. The steel is Thunderforged(twist pattern) nickel damascus and A2 backspring. Although the flutes aren't perfect on this one by any means, I'm happy with this "experiment" and I'm confident I can do better on the next one.

I think you might see more knives with "Sheffield Bolsters" coming out of the Wilfred Works in the future.;)

Wow, is just not enough for that. Excellent Kerry, I can not believe how much you have progressed since the first KHnutbuster. Exceptional work, that is one fine knife anyone would be proud to own.

Awesome knife. Someone is going to be very pleased.

So are those rat tailed bolsters as opposed to fluted bolsters?

Be still my beating heart.

:thumbup:Dang I'd hate :eek:to know what PERFECT looks like:D IF that one isn't??!!

This pertains to the flutes as stated in Kerrys post;)

But on another note I think that the WHOLE thing is PERFECT if not you could send it to me and I'LL fix it:D scar it up and USE HER and all will be good and PERFECT!!!!!:)

Yowza!!! Great looking knife there. I really cant tell that the fluting isnt perfect. Looks gorgeous to me.

Really nice job Kerry and Boses'. Any hint on how you did it?

It's a PITA but you just need to smack that pin without smackin the rest of the knife. The ditches on this thing are done with a 3/8" rattail file so you have to use something that size to smash the pin out. See?...SIMPLE! :D:p

Nice work from the Wilfred Works! Getting that "Sheffield look" is a worthy goal, and puts you guys head and shoulders above other traditional makers.
I'm so proud of you guys (sniff!)!! :D

Nicely done "experiment", Kerry. I have to say that the "Lanny's" is a great all around pattern!

Damn good lookin Knife Kerry.... The bolsters came out great, and your grind lines on the saber blade are perfect. Congrats to the new owner.......

 With that last group hug image, this thread is now officially not appropriate for office environments! I do wonder if it ever was though.

As it is, I can never again listen to Justin Timberlake anymore without images of Kerry's "Bringing Sexy Back" hillbilly look popping in my head. I'm hopelessly ruined for life. Only thing that might help me recover is a KH knife. :D
