Kerry Hampton Knives

Kerry, You are making some awesome slipjoints dude. Would you teach me how? I have one of Tonys tutorials on my Favorites but there are some details not there. The bushing and liner thicknesses etc.

Good grief Bruce...do I have to teach you EVERYTHING! LMAO!!!:D

Thanks for pointing out the tutorial bugs. I have a few more completed knives under my belt now(actually all of them:p) since Tony and I worked on those tutorials. That experience will be helpful as I go completely thru them and tweak as needed.

For the regular TF&FB homies that don't get outside of this forum much, Bruce makes some ultra cool working pistol/knife pieces that are real works of art. I really loved this WIP thread he did. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=552759&highlight=work+progress

Bruce, you might want to check out Kerry's "Learning how to make a slip joint" where he goes thru his first one with Tony: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=441633 -- lots of details in there. Also, in addition to the Bose Backpocket tutorial: http://boseknives.com/backpocket-construction/ there is also one of doing the pivot bushings: http://boseknives.com/pvtbushing/ and one of doing the liner milling: http://boseknives.com/liner-milling/ (and even on setting the lanyard tube Tony style: http://boseknives.com/lanyard-tube/ ).

Just FYI: normal liner thickness is 0.040" (410SS); bushings are 3/16" OD, 3/32" ID and lapped to 0.001" over the blade tang thickness.

Hey knifehead, thanks for the compliments.
I made a pistol with a slip joint blade. Its out to the engraver right now. I have a great respect for you slippie makers now.

I want to carry one like you are making so I'm working on a mini feather pattern damascus for it.

Hi Dwight,
It looks like you have done your homework. Thanks much for all the links. I have them all saved now but need to sort through them all. Kerry and Tony should write a book and save me all the links. I bet they could sell a ton of them.

Dwight show me what you make.
Bruce

Bruce, I'd love to show you my work, but right now all I can show you is my frustration and a whole lot of accumulated information. For an assortment of reasons, setting up a little shop of my own didn't happen and won't really for a while. But I'm planning to do all I can to have something going by the end of this year, even if it's extremely limited.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing what you do with just a "regular" slipjoint -- I expect it will be a dandy. You will probably have a real problem trying to keep people from buying it out of your pocket. :D Ah well, then you'll just have to make another one, and another, and another, and ....

....quiet in here :)

...wake up CNasty....ahhhh, look at the little fella sleepin so soundly but his little hands are making motions like he's opening and closing a knife....ahhhhhhhh dayum!:D That's right Vince, he is DREAMING! ;)

I will say something about ole Campbell though...he is determined when it comes to finding lost knives. He told me he dropped "orange krush" overboard in 140ft of water and retrieved it with a magnet after a 2+ hour search.

Well,I tried to put a good word in for him . :D

Nice try Campbell!:p
Wondering what else Kerry is carrying to Blade that I will be missing?

Jim, just his first ivory five-blade Rodgers whittler. Whoops, did I just type that? Never mind...
I heard via the grapevine that his first capped bolster knife was in the works. ;) Was wondering if it was making it to Blade.

Is there a "one stop shopping" place to buy the steel and pins? I'm having trouble locating the 410 ss and the matching pins in the correct sizes. Also is the 316 ss available from a welding supply? I cant see it listed anywhere. Am I a pain yet?

Can't help with the steel and pins Bruce, but if you want a customer, put me down for a few, if you get into slipjoints. I will see you at Blade and introduce you to some folks.

If Kerry brings a capped bolster knife to Blade, he better wear a helmet. I might just loose control, bop him over the head, leave cash in his pocket and walk away. Lord knows the boy can not afford any brain damage from that :D.

There, I fixed it for you.:D

No Bruce...yer a pain STILL!!! JUST KIDDING of course. ;)

I get mass quantities of the 316L welding rod in a tube from AirGas stores...they carry it in my town. You want to make sure you get the 'L" stuff because it is better for spun heads.

If you can't find 410ss pin material, you can use 416ss as it will meld into 410 nicely without showing. Sometimes you have to hit up several different sellers of this stuff to get what you need. I like the Bose method of getting supplies: When you find what you need, buy up all you can afford because you ain't gonna find it again when you run out. :D

Nope, but its going to be one that I work on right after the big shooo.

Really? OK Bastid you are on the list. How do you spell Bastid? :D
Not going to Blade this year. Will be in Chicago in Sept with a couple I hope.
I'm getting stoked about the slippies.
