Kerry Hampton Knives

It was good to hear from you today Jim...use that sucker! ;p

That's a nice one you have there James. Can you post a picture of your new trapper with your ivory KHnutbuster?

Christian..that Khnutbuster is lookin sweeter than on your wedding day!:cool: I'm a proud papa! :D
You should be. This is a great knife and the only irreplaceable one in my collection. When I first got it my brother told me that it was too nice to use. I told him it was too good not to.

Just got this one in, it seems it went on a Bose/Case tour before being mailed. Let me tell you, this one is even better than the pictures show, my photo skills suck, but Kerry's don't, but even he did not bring out the beauty from the Masters apprentice. Thanks to Kerry and to the Dawg for all the training and coaching of Kerry's excellent skills.

Thanks again,
Jim
Now, if I can just work up some courage to take it out in the yard for yard cleanup.:)

Jim, that knife is just incredible!

The scales on the KHnutbuster are not quite as bright as shown, but close, it is some of the clearest, creamest Ivory I have ever seen. I know Kerry wants me to stick it in a tree and get some grime on it, but so far I have not had the courage, the knife is perfect, as is the WT. All I can say, if you want a knife from a maker that will be the next Bose, you need to get your name in Kerry's filing cabinet so that he can throw a dart at some of the sheets and maybe your name will come up.
His knives are that good. No insult to Tony or Reese, but he has been trained and tutored by the best. AND IT SHOWS!!

Months ago I was contacted by a guy that is on my waiting list. He asked if it would be ok to give up his spot for a friend that he wanted to get a knife for. Sounded ok to me but, little did I know at the time, this would become a very special project for a very special guy.

It was simple...I was given some latitude as to what I would build and I suggested a Lanny's clip as this would be a tough knife that his friend would use. We had talked about putting ivory on it but I must have forgot about that little detail. Somehow I got it in my mind that this would be a great knife to try something different. I decided to try my hand a making some saw-cut bone. So, I used the vertical mill and fly cutter to make "saw cuts" on some bone that I had dyed.

I finished up the knife and sent this image to the fellow that ordered it.

Now the plot thickens because, ya see, this knife was to become a special gift for a guy to remember an important milestone; 25 years of sobriety. The customer asked if I could etch something on the blade that would be appropriate to the occasion. I came up with an idea and it is too embarrassing to even mention except to say what ended up being done on the knife instead was ...cough cough....better :D.

The knife and 25 year sobriety coin was sent to a very talented engraver and he returned the image back with a photoshopped drawing of what he proposed to do.

I shipped the knife to the engraver and he did his magic. As soon as I got the knife back, I shot images of the knife with it sitting on a ceramic insulator on my window sill at work:

To use the customers words, this project "grew legs and had a life of it's own". Several people got interested in being a part of making this a memorable gift. When a guy that makes sheaths heard about it, he wanted to make a pouch for it. Since timing was an issue, rather than ship the knife to him, I used one of the images and put the knife's dimensions on it so that he could make a fitted pouch.

I have more images so I will continue this to another post.

So here's the completed project. The engraving is by Brian Hochstrat and the sheath is by Paul Long. There's much more to the story but the guys involved in it know who they are. Great acts of love and kindness are performed every day and you never hear about. It was a privelege to be a part of this one.

If you aren't familiar with Brian Hochstrat's work (I wasn't), here is his web site. http://bhsaddles.com/ Yep, he makes custom saddles too. If that isn't folksy, I don't know what is. :D

That has to be one of the coolest , most meaningful knives I have seen.

Elegantly finished all the way around , knife , sheath and engraving. Hard to imagine a knife exists that can be any better than this.

Kudos to all involved. And congrats to the recipient on 25 years sobriety.

Thanks to all involved in this Paul Kessler, Kevin Jones, John Hanlon, and Paul Long. Of Course the craftsmen involved Kerry Hampton, Brian Hochstrat, and Paul Long.:D:thumbup: Thank you all very much, you guys are wonderful:D The knife is 100% times better in person:thumbup::thumbup:
