Recommendation? Kershaw Dividend M390 or Composite

If Kershaw's M390 is anything like the M390 on their ZT blades, it would be fantastic.

Well both of course:D

I have the m390 Version and was actually carrying it this weekend. The dividend is a great EDC folder imo being lightweight and thin yet capable as well as affordable.
I actually ordered the composite version this weekend as well since it looks awesome with the new milled handle and green is my fav! The black liners and deep clip look cool and the composite blade has an interesting pattern. its nice Kershaw stepped up to powdered metal D2 for the edge.

Check the Cedric and Ada channel on YouTube.

  • Kershaw is not going to have the best M390 or the best CPM-D2, as far as their heat treat process goes, so the max numbers Pete posted don't apply in this case

In fact neither Kershaw's nor ZT's 20CV/M390 do all that well in any published cut test I've seen, whether that be Cedric&Ada, SSS, Outpost 76, or any other cut testing channel online. It seems to perform like midrange S30V in practice. I can't say I disagree with their findings, seeing how quickly it goes dull in my own experience.

Did you receive it since this weekend?
Which one do you finally prefer?

That's surprising to me. I have a ZT0620 and a ZT0777 in M390 and they keep their edges a lot longer than any other S30V blade that I own. I used to sharpen my S30V (Benchmade, Emerson, etc.) about once a week, compared to several weeks with the M390.

Don't know what to tell you. Do a controlled test and see what comes up. Maybe yours are good, or maybe you're not comparing them well enough (same cut media, same edge angle and finish, etc).

There is a noticeable difference to me between M390 that is heat treated optimally (like the M390 in Spyderco's recent Manix 2 runs) and whatever KAI did to the 20CV that I've gotten from them, just based on sharpening experience and EDC use.

m390 if you are gonna put it to work, if you are gonna edc it and cut a few things here and there then composite all day....

I presume you didn't get it as scheduled, or you can't stop playing with it :D

The composite is very nice looking and pretty well done. The blade has like an acid wash finish and overall the knife looks awesome! Im pretty happy with it.

As far as which I would recommend over the other obviously I bought both but I would say either is going to be just fine for a daily carry and edge retention should be adequate with either steel. The composite does come with the deep clip stock where the M390 doesn't but you can email Kershaw and they will send you the same deep clip for free if you prefer that.

The only thing I would point out is the M390 corrosion resistance as an advantage over CPM-D2 but that already has patina from the factory as well so i would say go with whatever you like if only in the market for one folder. Really can't go wrong with either choice imo.

Very nice, I think you're right, the main difference between both blades will not be the edge retention, but rather the corrosion resistance.
And for this, just not leave the D2 part of the blade in water or outside will do it.

Many thanks for your comments, and for the pictures.:thumbsup::thumbsup: :)

I'm really happy, I received mine today.
Razor sharp, just perfect in the hand.
I like this knife, more than all the other ones I already had.
I'm waiting for the GFN one which I ordered just before this one.
Really happy :D

I'm headed home to snag my composite out of the mailbox !
