Kershaw Double Cross

Yeah, I know... but it has "slip-joint" styling to it. Nobody would confuse this with some kinda tactical one-hander.
Well, since I am here again.... just how big/how far do the thumb studs stick out?
Thanks, Mongo

The thumb studs do stick out a bit past the scales--maybe 1/32". This hasn't been a problem for me so far, but others may differ. I consider it a "low profile" pocket knife and rapid deployment is not an issue.

I've been putting this to more use at work lately and still love it, yep agree with the Magic man it is a bit wide but having two blades is nice and I put up with the width, the thumbstuds haven't proven to dig through my pants...yet... and the blades haven't even given a hint of ever opening in my pockets. The wharncliff blade works great for trimming those little hang nails, nice and pointy! and sharp! Sharpening pencils this thing excels with the edge geometry, really slices deep into the wood, a lot of knives have too thick an edge and even trying to sharpen a pencil can prove frustrating with some knives, one of the Graley tests of a knife I suppose? But it is a handy way to give a quick check of how well a knife will cut/slice.

Pocket lint is still a problem, haven't made a sheath for this one, but the pants I wear, Columbia, have a neat little extra pocket, meant for change, at the bottom of the normal pocket and I nestle this knife into that little pouch. But the lint still gathers, gets wiped off at each use but is a pain.

September and still going strong and becoming a much needed knife for tons of uses, blades are thin enough that they really slice, almost a convex edge on those suckers!

Just had to comment! :)

Now for another point of view.

There is just too much handle for the amount of blade. The ratio of handle to blade is wrong. The handle is too thick.

When you pick it up and flick open the blade do you know which blade will open with out looking?

AUS-8 would have been a better choice, for knife people.

I appreciate that Kershaw stept outside the box but those are my opinions.

Roger, I fully agree with the not knowing which blade is up without looking part, do that all the time when I go to use it, but it's not too much an inconvience as with most multibladed knives you have to go to the nail nick of the one you want anyways so it doesn't seem to out of the way for me, but I do know what you mean, I'm always flipping it over to get to the blade I want...;)

BUT I do disagree on the handle too big thing, for me it is about right, you don't lose the knife in your hand when using it, the extra size seems great to me, not too slim and I have excellent control over the wharncliff blade, so for that I would argue but then it's a personal thing and each has their own way of holding a knife.

Thanks for the responce...!

Hi, this is my first remark in bladeforums, after looking at it for the last 1,5 years.
I saw the Double Cross 2 Years ago in my Knife-shop, was interested, but it was too expensive.
After I read the interesting Review from you, Gary, from April 2002 and from Buzzbait from Oct 2001 I bought it
2 month ago and was inspired specially by the wharncliff-blade. These days I put some notches with a file in the
thumstud of the wharncliff, to feel - wihout looking - with my thumb, witch blade to open and it works.
The handle is just very well for me, it feels better/bigger in my hand than the Kiwi, which I just bought
because of its wharncliffe-blade. Good in my hand is as well the Beretta Trident with G10- scales.
Now I am looking for the Kershaw Task with wharncliffe. Any opion or experience about that ? Does it have a clip ?
I can't find it any more in the US-Online-Shops, my lokal Knife-Shop has 1 left over.
Actually I don't like the automatically opening (Ken Onion) of the blade but there are so few knives with wharncliffe !!
I am carrying the Double Cross (and the Double Duty !) and the Beretta Trident in the biggest
William Henry Clipcase and the Kiwi in the middle Clipcase.
By the way, I am very satisfied as well with my Klotzli Wharncliffe with clip and the Wharncliff from William Henry
International Series with clipcase.
Best wishes
Stefan

I feel in love with the double cross when I first saw it as well. It is extremley sharp and could cut just about anything. The aus 6 is definatley great on this blade. I mean kershaw made me quite impressed with the job they did with 420 on the scallions, so I am not suprised at the quality of steel.

My one compalint however is the amount of blade play that mine has. I could wobble the blade by simply shaking the blade a little.

Every copy of the double cross that I have seen is like this so I thought this was a common occurence. Maybe I should send it in.

Same Situation I have with my Double Cross and Double Duty (the bigger one). Just one blade has a little blade play; luckily not the wharncliff-blade, but I still can live with it. This knive with two blades is still impressing me and the AUS6 is o.k. for such a combination between oldtimer stile an new one-hand use.

Since last year I was saving my money and so I bought 1 from SterlingCustomKnives with MoP scales and with the same clippoint- (more like a bowie) and wharncliff-blade in ATS34, as I saw it 2 years ago. Have a look:
http://de.f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/stefanschlaegel/detail?.dir=/fde7&.dnm=c4d7.jpg

I have it for 1 week now and I am still very exited and happy.
It lies pretty good in my hand.It is a perfekt craftmansship work from M.Sterling .
I thought from time to time, if a clip would be okay at it ( normally, I prefer Onehand-knives with a clip) or would it look funny at that type of knife. Anyway I really love this knife, it is my EDC now. It has the right size, and I will use my bigger Kershaw Double Duty in the woods for the heavier work.

With a new camera, brings new life to old threads ;)

Here is a shot of my still favourite folder, one that is destined to stick around, just a great little cutter even if it has a lowly level on the steel, takes a super edge though!

What's the new camera Double G?

I just bought my first a Nikon Coolpix 4300.
I'm going to be taking new pics of all of my knives.

It is a Fuji FinePix S5000, very nice camera, shot was hand held, I have a Nikon 6T closeup lens attached as well, pretty nice stuff this digital!

Looks like you sure are enjoying that new camera Gary, and it does take great pictures with a great person behind it :)
Now for the Kershaw Double Cross. I have had one for a couple of years now, and it sits on my table by my easy chair, and use it daily. I have been really impressed with it, and has gotten smoother over the time as it was tight in the beginning. For a AUS6 blade I think holds a decent edge, and strop mine periodicly, and stays sharp without having to use a stone of any sort. Not my custom Huffman Whittler or Queen's in D2 but still a dandy little knife, and like the linerlock, and studs. Would like one of those Sterling knives in the same configuration but just seem to never put the money aside for one.
I have a couple of the Double Duty's but they ended up in the safe as collectors as like the Double Cross better with it's wharencliffe blade for that fine cutting.
I think it is one of the few knives you have held onto so you must like it as well as I like mine, and I don't mean that to be offending :)

Yeah Gary, I think you and I were the last of the Scanner School hold-outs.

I do believe you are correct sir! ;)

That Nikon looks to be a nice camera as well, I bought mine at www.Buydig.com

Here's a link to your Nikon Camera Not a bad price either. They ship by FedEx and seem quite reliable.

Here's a link to mine Fuji S5000 which I also added the 265meg card.

And Larry, I agree, the Double Duty is just a tad too large for my tastes where the Double Cross fits the bill nicely! Good to hear you are using it too!
I'd buy another if they came out in different scales and steel, hmmm Stag and S30v...that'd be sweet eh? :)

I was making a Mnandi sheath for a fellow and it was a little short, so made another one that worked perfectly, but I was left with the startings of a small right hand vertical sheath and as I was working on some sheaths today I remolded it to fit the Double Cross, I'll post some pics next week as I already sold my Fuji S5000 and have a Fuji S7000 due on Monday.
So I'll have a sheath available if someone was thinking of getting one to make it easier to carry the Double Cross, it's not embossed or dyed yet so give me a holler if anyone is interested.

ps
camera's are almost as bad as knives and watches! ;)

Well, I followed this thread and, because of you guys, ended up buying a Double Cross. Haven't received it yet.

Had to join this forum to coax Gary into putting up those pictures of the sheath. I may be interested if it isn't already spoken for.

BTW, cameras are worse than knives. I've been in a few camera forums and lots of times those discussions don't end up as friendly as gun and knife forums. Ironic, isn't it.

Can't wait to get the Double Cross. I need to sell off a few lenses and bodies so I can pick up the Dozier Pro Guide which has been eating away at me for a while. I think the knife bug has hit. Although I've had a couple of examples for some time (Spyderco Endura, Case-XX), I'm a newby to knifedom and have some basic stuff to learn.

Welcome Ed !
You'll like that Double Cross, good knife, when mine arrived the locks were some what not too tight, called Kershaw, returned the knife to them, they sent me a new one that I've had for a LONG time and the locks work great.

The sheath is still available, but is about 80% finished, I ended up embossing it with a Fleur di lis image, medium brown sheath, right hand vertical, I'll email an image if you like when it's finished.

Cameras, man it's a tough thing! Tempers sure can go up on about any forums eh?

So I'll give you first refusal on this sheath, since I wear the Case stag wharncliff and won't use this one often.
