Kershaw Ken Onion Whisper scans

Thanks Dexter, I'll wait and see how Ken responds....I'll be seeing Rick Hinderer this weekend and will talk to him at the show about it too...

Dexter, talked at length with Rick Hinderer and what a nice guy he is too, and as I had heard tell he basically re-engineered the locking mechanism for thie Whisper, and he noted the comments of the blade to handle ratio and in order for it to work correctly that was what was needed. I asked if it was a secret that he worked on the knife and he said that Kershaw and Ken both said NO, it's not a secret that he has worked on it, so I thought I'd post some credit towards Rick in this work. All in all it is a great looking knife and he said that the lock is one of the strongest he has ever seen.

It's true guys Rick did all the cad work for the Whisper and also built the prototypes for Kershaw. He is not only a very talented knifemaker/engineer but also a great guy. I would highly recomend one of his Fire-Tac knives as a great knife /buy!
It's also true he altered the lock to facilitate manufacturability( is that a word ?)
There are several ways to accomplish the same end result this way was simpler for him .Hope this clears the air .

Any other questions ?

Aloha!!! Ken Onion

With the lock being at the front of the handle it sure seems like it would be real easy to hit the lock, on accident, while cutting and have the blade fold up on you. What are you opinions on this Dexter?

KnifeDude - I can see your concern, and can tell you there is no worry. Since your hand is gripping the part of the handle away from the lock release, you're safe. Plus, in order to release the lock, you have to push down on the "vault" firmly to get the thumb stud past it. And since the "vault" is of low profile, it blends in with the lines of the handle.

i think the whisper might turn out to be a great knife but i have a couple of comments on it. Personally i don't like the rubberish inlays, and if it's driving costs up then i think they should be removed, the grooves on the handle looks like it will provide a good enough grip already. however, plain ti slabs might look a little plain so maybe some kinda hold pattern would be knife. ken onion seems to be very fond of having holes in his handles anyways :) i think the handle might be a bit big for the knife the grooves on the handle seem a bit extreme and im reminded of a trench knife when i look at it. the speed safe is always nice and the index trigger is great but what i REALLY dislike about the knife is the clip position, personally i hate tip down carry especially on a speed safe knife, think about it the index trigger snags in your pocket when you pull it out, i hated carrying my boa so much in my pocket i had to get a sheath for it. and i just noticed that all of ken onions knives are very un lefty friendly which makes me sad. and btw 350 msrp is off the charts, street price is going to be around 250 which is still way too high, and i thought EKI knives where overpriced.
