I accidentally dropped a ATS34 Benchmade and later a M390 Zieba tip down on concrete, ~3 feet. In both cases the steel did not chip off but the tip did bend a wee bit. It sharpened out and as expected it took a bit longer with the harder M390.
Kershaw says their Magnacut is 62-64 Rc which is harder than Benchmade’s ATS34 and Zieba’s M390. Maybe Magnacut is not the best thing since sliced bread
High hardness and a propensity to chip used to be a “given,” maybe it still is for Magnacut.
Not so for ZDP-189, an “old” steel. I don’t have a Magnacut blade but my WH Quest with San Mai ZDP-189 at 65-67Rc has yet to chip or require serious sharpening after >10 years of use. It has a “tiny point” too.
However, maybe it’s not the steel but Kershaw’s heat treat
