Has any one had any trouble with a LEEK? I recently bought one at Smokey Mountain Knife Works and the blade bends like a strip from a tin can. Evidently poor or no heat treatment. I haven't checked the Rockwell but it will have to be low.

Does it hold an edge? The blade bending shouldn't be a problem, as long as you're just cutting things. :)

My rainbow leek won’t quick open any more. I wonder how hard is it to change the bar that is in it. I have never heard of the blade being bent before.

Exactly, manowar669. If the heat treat is correct. Blade flexing is a completely different thing.

Your first step should have been to either take it back to SMKW or call up Kershaw CS and tell them the problem, they will most likely want to look it over and will fix or replace it for free. Sorry you had trouble, I have had 6 through my hands all different models and none have exhibited that behavior.

With all due respect, Mr. Bad_JuJu, at my advanced age and with my experience with knives and knife making, I don't need my steps directed in this matter. My experience with Kershaw over the years says they will not repair the knife as we should not "pry" with their knives. Which is not to mention that a well made knife will withstand a lot of "prying". I am aware they will replace the blade for a fee. The only reason I purchased a Kershaw is that I like their assisted opening with the forefinger.
I have decided to keep the knife to use at knife shows and gun shows as an example.
Merry Christmas to every one and especially Mr. Bad_Juju.
PS: Mr. Bad_Juju, I did notice your tags indicating your connection, either small or large, with Kershaw and KAI. Possibly you could let them know that at least some of their knives are defective in heat treatment. I would appreciate that.

Before you start throwing accusations around about heat treating, why don't you fill us in with some details.

What's the steal on the Leek?

What were you doing to get it to 'bend'?

How about you post some pictures.

Ok wow....

Did you even call them? I'm guessing from your condescending attitude, you did not.

I don't see any accusations in the OP. The word "evidently" implies there is evidence. An accusation would read something like: "They didn't HT it properly." He's making an observation.

Mr. Echols, I would assume with your advanced age you would know the appropriate steps to take to have this issue resolved. If it is indeed a heat treat issue they would replace it free of charge, period. Are you saying you did pry with the knife and this how you noticed it bent? If it is just an opinion that it is not properly heat treated or whatever conclusion you have come to then obviously they will not replace it for free. If you have the experience you say you do which I do not doubt, you should have nothing to loose. If it is just lofty expectations, they will send it back to you and you are out the $5 plus change for the initial shipment.

Respectively, if I have a problem with someone's product, I personally would be sure to express my concern directly to them, not ask a friend or gentleman on the forums to do so for me. Reason being, how can they make it right if you don't give them the opportunity? If someone purchased a knife from you and it had heat treat problems (would bend or not keep an edge) would you rather have them contact you to fix the problem or have them make a thread stating they have a problem but aren't asking you to fix it just stating there is a problem with Echols Made Knives?

If you still wish to keep it as a display for your trade shows, I respect that. I however would urge you to let them inspect the knife so they may address whatever problem there may or may not be.

Best to you and yours this holiday season, respectively.

I believe he actually did unfortunately. Which is why I suggest letting them inspect it.

I never had any problems with my user Kershaw. In fact, its performing above and beyond considering the price I paid.

I have EDC'ed a leek every day for 10 years and never had an issue. Yes, i pry with it daily.I have never had a bendy blade and ive carried every steel produced. I have broke quite a few tips, but that is to be expected. Once it breaks i just grind it to a sheepsfoot and keep on going.
