Kershaw Leek

I saw a Leek at Wal-Mart for 47.97. Good buy?

Yes. Wal-Mart is so big they can often rival online prices (shipping & handling included). The cheapest non-auction online place sells it for $45.88. Add $6 shipping and handling, it totals about $52. After tax you'll pay about $52 as well at Wal-Mart. Considering you get to fondle the knife right after you forked the cash over, that Wal-Mart Leek is a good deal.

is it the all black leek? Thats a pretty good deal. I bought my od-1 from walmart for $40 and the the cheapest other place I could find it was $50 online

There are plenty of Dealers that support this site that offer Kershaw.
I'm sure you could find one that has a decent price on Leeks.

btw OP, deal spotting is a no-no.

Is it a Leek model that you like? The only Leeks that I've seen recently at Wmart were combo blades. I prefer Leeks in a plane edge.
So, unless it is a model that you particularly like, then I'd say its not a great deal.

$38 is not worth it for a 3" knife blade with sub par steel
I would hardly call 440A "sub-par", it produces a perfectly servicable knife and is IMO quite acceptable for a knife at this price point. I think some people get way too caught up in the "super-steel-of-the-day" fanfare. Few if any people really need CPM-S30V or D2 blades unless you are doing lots of heavy cutting on a daily basis.

and a tip that breaks off waaaay too easily.
Only if you use it for a pry-bar or screw driver. I've got several Leeks, some of them over 5 years old and never broke a tip on any of them.

Also, the torsion bars are hit and miss. Mine broke after two weeks.
I can only say I never had a problem with the torsion bars of any of my Kershaws.

Alright, it is not sub-par. However, I think paying $50 for a 3" blade that is 440A is a poor deal. . . maybe not for retail prices, but why pay $50 when you can get it for so much less? I would want to see at least VG10 for a $50 price point on a 3" blade.

The blade tip is a bit too narrow and thin that it can break just from heavy use, even if you aren't doing something you shouldn't like using it to pry or as a screw driver.

You are lucky then. There have been a lot of QA problems with the torsion bars.

Either way, would you agree with me that $50 is too much to pay for a Leek? Especially when you can get much better knives out for the same price?

Please read the sticky at the top of the General Forums.
This type of thread does not there, but rather in the GB&U of the exchange forum.

We are interested in keeping the General forums open for the discussion of the knives themselves. If we allowed the where to by, is this a good deal threads there it would not take long for the discussion forum to turn into a knife consumer reports page on where to get the best deals.

It is Sandvik 13C26. I believe the packaging is a typo. Sandvik steel with SpeedSafe and DLC coating sounds like $50+ range to me.

Any knife can break. Use it for its intended design and no problem. The Leek is not a "hard-use" knife. I EDC mine and don't subject the tip to undue force in normal EDC usage. I have "hard-use" folders and fixed-blades for that.

You are lucky then. There have been a lot of QA problems with the torsion bars.

I have not heard of the torsion bar as being an "issue" per se, but as with anything, it can fail. Luckily Kershaw has great customer service.

I would disagree. $50 for the black Leek is a good price. It has been a great knife for me and is part of my regular EDC rotation. Everyone will have opinions on it good and bad. Mine happen to be of the positive nature. Take it FWIW.

Heres mine with Kydex neck sheath:

What is wrong with 440A? It is as good as the steel in your Saks or your Leatherman tools. And as stated, it is now 13C26 as the standard steel with higher grades also available.
If you know that the tip is thin and narrow why would you use it for heavy materials?
The average torsion bar lasts 10,000 cycles. It has nothing to do with luck. There are going to be exceptions, good and bad. Kershaw customer service will send you new torsion bars free when you contact them. Please document your claims of "a lot of QA problems" with the Speedsafe system. The price coupled with the warranty service and the quality of the product are well worth the price. Please supply your list of "much better knives for the price" for us to scrutinize.
