Kershaw Liner Lock failure

The centerline in the illustration is only the centerline if you are stabbing parallel to the line.

Correct. And everything else a "tactical" knife is designed for. Don't believe me? Go to the KAI website and see for yourself. I believe the word they use is piercing. Bottom line; thin liner locks should be treated with extra care.

Failures sometimes happen. Even on the best steel/blades/blade smithing in the world. Play with knives...

Considering the lowered tip and the recurve blade, I would say slicing and slashing.

Either way, the point is moot. The OP found the failure was operator error, not the knife.

from the KAI website;

Like all Blurs, this new red-and-black version is equipped with a big, slightly recurved blade that’s ideal for multitasking. The blade shape offers both excellent slicing and piercing capabilities and the high-performance Sandvik 14C28N stainless blade steel is corrosion resistant and holds its edge. Black DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating protects the blade and looks fierce with this Blur's red handles and black Trac-Tec grip-tape inserts. The handle itself is durable 6061-T6 anodized aluminum, sometimes described as “aircraft aluminum” since it is a common material used for aircraft fittings. But the main point is that it’s lightweight, extremely durable and, when anodized, accepts a dye so we can create colored handles that are scratch resistant and extra tough.

For easy one-handed opening, the Blur is equipped with SpeedSafe assisted opening. A short push on the thumbstud overcomes the resistance built into the torsion bar in the SpeedSafe mechanism. Then SpeedSafe takes over and the blade moves out of the handle quickly and easily. The pocketclip is reversible for your choice of tip-up or tip-down carry. There’s even a pre-drilled lanyard hole.

The bold sentence is relevant to the topic. Thanks Crom for pointing that out.

Maybe it's just me but 'piercing capabilities' to me says, 'it has a sharp tip' and not 'you can repeatedly stab hard objects with it'. Just like slicing capabilities doesn't mean it can chop a tree down.

No where in that description does it say 'tactical' or 'hard use'. It says multi-tasking which means light to medium duty EDC tasks.

Either way, the point is moot. The OP found the failure was operator error, not the knife.

The definition of piercing is to penetrate a material, the definition of stabbing is to violently pierce something. :)

They aren't for petting like pussy cats. Argue semantics all you want. The knife is all business and was around before all the super heavy duty/half pound ZT type knives of today that people take for granted when they think of "hard use". I have had mine since 2007 and have used it a ton, lock is solid. Still advise OP to run it past Kershaw.

That would be an interesting phone call.

'Hey Kershaw, I was going to stab something and my pinky disengaged the lock bar, can you check it out for me?'

Hey Scurvy, do they pay you for this? They should at least give you a knife or two for defending the brand so well :D I've noticed your posts on these sort of threads, maybe you can help mod a new Kershaw subforum!

Sometimes I wish BladeForums had a like button.

Just for grins I Googled the definition of pierce. Notice that four letter word that is synonymous with pierce?

pierce
pi(ə)rs/
verb
1.
(of a sharp pointed object) go into or through (something).

synonyms: penetrate, puncture, perforate, prick, lance; stab, spike, stick, impale, transfix, bore through, drill through

Scurvy, how would Kershaw word it, "the knife has stabbing capability"? No, they play it safe and use the cuddly "pierce". Don't tell me you think Kershaws ad copy means the Blur is a fruit tester. How long have you been using a Blur? What is your experience with the durability of the lock? I'm comfortable that mine wouldn't fold with a stab to wood no matter how hard I gripped it. It's a deep recessed liner lock, no exposed like the Military by Spyderco.

When it comes to information and how people process it, some will have a bias for their truth to come how they want it. He's a rabid KAI fan check out his previous posts. They even kick him down free goodies as a reward for his service. I know he doesnt work for KAI but he'd make a great subforum mod, like they never skipped a beat.

I still have the 1st Kershaw I ever bought. It's 14 years old. Still works perfectly even if its a little loose. These are hard use tools to some, pocket jewelry to others.

Im not sure why this thread got so off track from the OP and why its turned personal but im guessing it needs closed
