Kershaw MiniCyclone ZDP-189 (pics)

Wondering if these are regular production? I don't see anything indicating a limited addition on the box. Just got mine today. A very very nice folder! Best I've seen from Kershaw; on par with a Sebenza?...absoultely NOT! It is a cool EDC knife though. Fantastic job! Great deal for the money. I may have to order another so I can use this one. The BT coating won't last long.

I was browsing at a local knife store and saw this and had to pick one up. It is really well made, I only wish that kershaw would make some lefties.

Can't find the coating type, I assume it is DLC like on the Spec Bump. If so, it WILL last.

I don't know what it is, but it scrapes off if you push the tip through a Diet Dr. Pepper can. :)

Black Sharpie time!

Eric

Does it really scape off or are you depositing Aluminum on the coating? There were a lot of people saying that their coating on the Spec Bump didn't last either, and it turned out to be just stuff on the coating. I have scratched the coating on my Spec Bump but it took a sharpening stone to do it. Well, I'll find out, mine should be already in the mail.

I don't have it with me today, but I'm pretty sure it was scrapped off, saw shiny steel within the black. I will check more closely later. If I am wrong I will post to say so.

Eric.

In different thread it was named as DLC - Diamond like Coating, which is amorphous Carbon, so it is not BT (Black Teflon?) and I do not thin Kershaw ever used BT it is BM coating (not now as I understan). It is defenetely not BT - nail does not make any marks on it.

I really like Tomas to answer on this plus I am wondering what is blade HRC?

Thanks, Vassili.

I believe ZDP-189 is hardened between 58-60 Rockwell. I'm fairly sure the coating is DLC. But it still will scratch pretty easily.

it should be much harder than that. WH has theirs at 67, and I believe Spyderco hardens to at least 65.

Yeah, I stand corrected. Spyderco's literature says 64 RC. It's awesome stuff with 20% chromium to harden that much without being brittle.

anybody have a pic next to a spyderco delica or a BM 707? I'm considering seeking one of these out but am pretty particular about the size of my edc. Thanks.

I think the more amazing part is the carbon content. Technically (carbon content wise), ZDP-189 is a cast iron  . Considering that it is not very corrosion resistant, means it must be chock-full of Cr carbides.

Best I could muster on short notice...

thanks. just what I was looking for. looks like a pretty good size to me. the difficulty I face seems to be overall length rather than blade length. for some reason people I'm around seem to react more to knives with larger handles and overall lengths than simply blade length alone. Looks like this one is actually shorter overall than the delica!! excellent news for me!!

i like larger handles smaller blades like the zdp mini cyclone-my new yuna hard2 has a big handle for a 3'' blade-my biggest issue with the jyd is the handle is too thin and short, blade kicks azz

Love the blade shape on the Cyclone. Looks thin also which should make it a very nice slicing machine.

Guys,

The coating is DLC.

Pushing the blade through a soda can will just end up depositing the Aluminum onto the coating. It can look like a scratch, but it is not.

Simple green, soapy water and some elbow grease should get it off.

Craig.

I still like to hear official word from TomasW about hardness. I know that Hitachi announce 67HRC for ZDP189 and I know that japanese knifemakers suggest that best hardness for it is 65HRC, but I did not hear so far official word from Kershaw as well as from Spyderco.

William&Henry says that they has it 67HRC.

Thanks, Vassili.
