Kershaw OD1

I've never had a problem with blade retention but I did have a problem with staining but I was able to polish it out with the bead blast finish. The only other issue I've heard with this knife is a little play in the flipper mechanism although I never experienced it myself

I picked up the OD-1 awhile back. Why it was discontinued? Its great. Got a OD-2 Its for munckin hands. Anyone want it let me know. Gary

It was. It is a good knife. OD-2 is small , what is Kershaw doing? Gary

I ended up picking up an OD-1 blem for $40 from the auction place not long after this thread was started. It's a fantastic knife. Love the flipper on it even more than on the OD-2. No detent issues on mine at all (black handle). It's not the strongest detent I've ever felt, but it's not weak, either. No way the blade's gonna open unless you want it to. I agree that it's a sleek, elegant looking knife. Feels great in hand, too.

You should have your hearing checked, because you've heard wrong. I've carried the OD-1 for a long time, and I've had no issues with blade retention or rust issues. Can't speak for the 8Cr model, because I don't have one.

I agree. I have 2 of these knives, and have not seen either of these issues in years of carrying them.

The 1 is a US made frame lock in sandvik. The 2 is much smaller and a Chinese liner lock in 8cr13mov.

I happen to know where I can find one. But I believe I'll be the one to get it :D

Wow I didn't know that. Now I have to look for a 1.

I received a Kershaw Ener-G as a gift several years ago. It was my first nice pocket knife and is the knife that got me into knives. It has the same flipper design as the OD1. Its pretty much retired as an EDC but is still the benchmark by which I judge flipper knives. Have yet to get a manual flipper that opens as good as that knife.

Companies always do this and move on and try to just come out with new products. The OD-1 was a really good knife for the money though. Great little edc.

Thanks Gary, that was super kind of you, sent you an email back!

Funny story that I'm sure has happened to a bunch of folks on BF. I'm a little embarrassed to say it, but when I first started getting into knives, it was only as of last March. My brother had just been appointed the armed driver and not just a driver for the CEO of a Company in NYC. He was walking around with this behemoth Gerber Auto 06 and I kept thinking that how is he going to whip out this big knife with the samurai sword tip on it (I wasn't a knife person and didn't know that they were called tanto's at the time) to cut a loose thread on his shirt or something.

So I went on this search for a small gentlemen's knife for him and encountered nuttnfancy's videos and a bunch of other folks on youtube. I then found bf. I went into OCD mode after getting my brother a CRKT Tribute2. I ended up buying myself one and after looking at maybe 30 youtube videos I compiled a best under 3" EDC and/or best bang for the buck knife list and went to town buying, trading or ordering them. I can't tell you exactly how many knives I went through in a few months, but it must have been at least 20 - I had at the time saved it on a piece of paper.

My wife yelled at me after one day trying to open our junk drawer in the kitchen as it was stuck, since I had stuffed maybe 12 knives that I had just bought or traded for in a 2 month span. Lol. That went on through summer of course before I calmed down finally and that itch to buy, sell or trade subsided. One the good end of things, my wife is a partial convert now and she looks forward to me whipping out a peanut at BJ's whenever we have to cut out a coupon or open a box at home. She also prefers benchmade mini grips and mini presidios because of the Axis lock vs Spydercos and Kershaw flippers whenever we do yardwork. She also says ixnay on the Opinels as she says they look cheap. I disagree on the later but I'm glad that she has a different stance on knives as tools these days.

Long story short I ended up with an OD-2 and was able to compare it to the SOG Flash which Nuttn fancy loved. Had no idea why he liked the flash so much as it was cheaply made. The OD series is what the SOG Flash series should have been.

I threw out that piece of paper quite some time ago after calming down. But the whole process taught me about steels, sharpening knives and what I like and don't like about knives as well as what I do like about traditional and non-traditional folders in what ended up being a very short time. I have kept one photo of a CRKT Lake that I owned for all of 15 minutes after doing hours of research and then putting it on BF to trade. That one would have been a winner had it not been for the LAWKS system which I didn't like. But the OD-2 was maybe my 6th or 7th purchase after getting a Tenacious and a Skyline or something to that effect from that long list of knives to get.

I've had my OD-1 for around 5 years and its one of my favorite Kershaw designs. I'm not usually a fan of gimmicky knives but I love the flipper mechanism on the OD-1 and the build quality is excellent. I dont know where the idea that the OD-1 has horrible edge retention came from:confused: mine holds an edge just fine but I did get some rust spots before I started using TufGlide/TufCloth on all my blades. Id love to see them bring the OD-1 back with a satin finished blade and maybe some wood or carbon fiber handle scales it would make an excellent gentleman's folder:D

I've heard those have horribad blade retention. Both models, actually. That, and the rust-o-matic bead blast, are what has kept me from buying them when I've seen them pop up. I really like the flipper mechanism, though.

I do dislike the bead blast but my OD-1 has the strongest detent I have ever felt on a flipper. And I like my detents on the heavy side.

Effort involved when flipping the lever (function of leverage and angles), yeah, but hold the knife upside down and give it a sharp flick. Your blade will probably come open most of the way without much effort. I recall people talking about how little effort it took and Thomas replying that a weak detent was necessary for the design to work. Too much resistance and you wouldn't be able to overcome it with the lever, due to, uh...physics and stuff.

The lever rotates 90 degrees for 180 degrees of blade rotation. Force applied to the flipper has to be 2x the force required to rotate the blade.

I've never had a problem with retention but just now I'm able to whip out the blade with a solid flip. That being said, the blade never (ever) opened without my finger on the flipper mechanism. Well, before now anyway.

After cutting some flowers, my blade stained a bit but after using some rubbing compound the stain was gone and so was the bead blast finished. If your worried about rust or staining, buff off the bead blast finish.

I am sitting here with my OD-1 and, yes, it works. I did have problems when I first bought the knife but I can flip it with the flipper no problems now.
