Kershaw whiplash? any thoughts?

People have opinions about knives they've never handled or owned, nothing wrong with that. .
There used to be a guy around here that negatively reviewed our line of knives and critiqued the steel we used without ever touching or using them...for the life of me I can't remember his name though. Maybe someone will come up with it for me. As I recall, I can't say I was impressed.

It's curious that you feel so threatened by mine and dawsonbob's opinions and reservations about this knife that you ask him to shut up and question what I have to offer.

Josh, do you honestly believe the quotes I made in post #12 are opinions? Seriously now.

Honestly a lot of Kershaw designs don't appeal to me, but I have to give you kudos for producing quality USA made knives.

The Whiplash though......:o

They certainly aren't facts now are they?

I bet if there was a hole in the blade some of you guys would like it. Then you would claim it's innovative.
[flame on, it's not like you haven't been already]

I bet if it was made by CRKT like the earlier G&G production models some of you guys would hate it. Nah, I bet you all own the K-AT and D.O.G., they were innovative.

If the product is quality, I wouldn't care. But that's the problem, some of these people think unless it's a leaf blade with a hole it's a POS, they disregard it because it isn't "their" style. Just because it's not your style, doesn't mean it's a POS.

I have to admit when I saw the Whiplash I thought it was pretty "out there" but after reading this thread, I think I want to buy one just to beat the mess out of it. So often I buy a knife and it's pretty much what I expected. When they surprise you, that's a nice bonus :)

I see what your saying here and I agree to some point, but my general opinion is that Kershaw produces a much higher quality knife than CRKT all around. Just my opinion.

I did and they were. I have always thought the designs look a little juvenile, but, they work and there is at least one thing on every Hawk design that makes me say "wow, I never would have thought of that."

The knife looks interesting. Given it's probably not going to be as strong as other FB options out there, but it's also less expensive. I won't be buying it anytime soon (or ever), but that doesn't mean it's a bad knife. I'd be interested to see how well the knife holds up in an unbiased review.

I honestly don't get how you people can flame each other over personal opinions on knives. If you don't like it then don't get it, if you don't like that other people like it then too bad. The immaturity of some people amazes me.

I hadn’t considered batoning but depending on the spine thickness and the hardness of the steel who knows. If its at least 3/16” wide (maybe less) and at least that deep it probably won’t bend or break. Spine thickness of 1/8” or less and IMHO its buh bye! Harden up some quality steel to the same dimensions of the alleged weak point or get 1 or 2 for destruction testing. Bill Nye said 1 experiment is worth a 1000 expert opinions. I’m just saying don’t use it as a climbing piton for your Australian repel off the mall roof and the knife won’t cost you your life:D

Just to be fair about it -- since I've been one of the most vociferous detractors of this design -- I would be willing to do a review of this knife, too. I have condemned it for what I see as major flaws, but, admittedly, I've never used it.

If you want to send me one for testing, I would give it the fairest review that I could. Could I be fair? Yes, I think I could. I'm in my mid sixties, and have been using knives since I was about eight. My early training was as a mechanical engineer (BSME -- though I never practiced). I would look at this knife for:

1.) what the blade has to offer (shape, edge holding, toughness, etc.).

2.) ergonomics.

3.) features.

4.) overall usability.

5.) overall strength.

That's the best I can offer: a chance to prove me wrong on my initial assessment. It would be easy to get a glowing report from the fanboys, but what about from those of us who have panned the design? That would be valuable information, too.

I don't really expect to be sent one of these for testing, but it was only fair to offer.

I would have been fine with "I don't like that design. It looks too weak. I think it's ugly"

But the bashing with comparing it to Mattel toys was trollish IMO.
I've got 0 problem with someone not liking something, but how it comes out makes a difference.

I say put this behind us and let's wait on some reviews before any decisions are made.

Is it too late for me to get on the bandwagon? I'd do a fair review if you give me a free knife.;)
