Looking for recommendations on what firesteels or starters would be good on a car keyring.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure where to find them individually but there is a very small mag/ferro-rod that comes with the RAT Cutlery Izula if you order the knife with the kit. It's already got a whole in it so it can go right on a keychain. I know it would be silly to buy a knife just to get a tiny firesteel but if you are looking for a great neck knife or EDC fixed blade the Izula is awesome. Here's a couple pics. They are not great but they should give you and idea.

The Light My Fire brand 'Scout' sized firesteels are also pretty small and might work on a keychain.

I carry the light my fire scout model on my key chain. About the same length as my truck key.

I carry a Boy Scout model on my keychain, its the perfect size. They can be tough to find.

Its the one on the far right:

LightMyFire products are ALWAYS good, try the RAT FireKit, it is a bit larger and more expensive, but the misch metal puts out more sparks, plus you have room for tinder AND a compass can be put into the cap as well.

On my pda now so hard to copy/paste. Google "wisemen trading" and look at 'Sparky.'

Thanks for all the options guys. Recent threads have me thinking about my EDC tools, layering, and specifically, my keychain.

This is because, when backpacking, I don't like to wear a belt knife. I prefer a lightweight, sturdy folder (e.g. Grip or Minigrip) in my pants pocket. I also carry my keychain in my pocket. Adding the firesteel to the keychain supplements that layering, in the event of losing my pack, or having it stolen.

To that end, I've added an engraved Alox SAK Pioneer that my kids gave me as a gift :) And then added a Fenix E01. And now will add the steel.

Anything else you guys like to add, without making the keychain excessively cumbersome?

Again, thanks for your time.

A whistle and small aluminum capsule for PJCB's (tinder)

I saw those tubes at REI. Should've grabbed one.

What about a small compass? Any suggestions on one that is compact, but good quality in cold weather?

+1 on the RAT Cutlery Izula fire steel :) I've had it on my keys for a long time now.

The Mini-Match Magnesium Firestarter is available from here.

Try usaknifemakersupply.com. They have a pure magnisium rod with a misch metal rod glued to it. It's about 3-4 inches long and makes a great fire starter. The Doans magnisium bars flash off real quick then it's done, pure magnisium burns longer and gives you some more time. Match it up with a striker from goinggear.com and your set.
