Khukuri Knife Gallery

These are all FANTASTIC knives.

Steve, is that an assagai at the top right?

Hey Gator...your TA's Daddy was *my* all time favorite car too! It was a 1978, custom metalflake grey outside, white leather interior, bored and stroked with a nitrous kit, fully urethaned suspension, etcetcetc. Met it's untimely death in a curving, wet intersection that the Goodyear 260's (all 4, huge at the time) handled with ease. :D

Unfortunately, my stepson was driving her at the time and he didn't see the minivan being driven by the retired schoolteacher as she ran the red light.

He was fine, but my baby was totaled. :(

Who cares what happen to the teacher?

Very nice pics everyone! Love those antiques. Here's one of mine:

An action shot of my 18" AK during the infamous "Extreme Testing review"

I'll try to get a few more up later, they're 'unavailable' at the moment.

Bruce, believe me, it is. :) That's my baby, the one that I would keep above all the others. Kumar outdid himself forging that one.

all HI, except for the super long khukuri, wich is 44", with a gelbu special style fuller, unknown maker

khukuries-next-to-busse-basic-9.jpg

an interesting comparison, the busse basic 9 being closest to the 15" sirupati, something that kind of feels like a baby khuk next to the 18" ang khola. also not the american style cho creep  :footinmou

still have to get me a 16" ak, 20" chitlangi, 20" gelbu and a 20" foxies folly

Aardvark, I'm not really sure what it is. When I bought it, the seller thought it was Philippine. The boys over at EEWRS think it's African, possibly Zulu. The Assegai has a visible metal shank 8-10" long between the blade and shaft. If my spear is Zulu, as close as I can come is Umkhontos, a generic name for a throwing spear.

SethMurdoc, those are some beautiful pieces, especially the Katana. Love the carved handle and horn scabbard!

Steve

the fit and finish of the katana is pretty bad, loose buttcap, tip+side fittings on the sheath are iether very loose, or completely come off, the tip grind is highly uneven on the blade, overall not the best quality. BUT, most of the sheath problems can be fixed with glue and a hammer, and the sword is a work horse, not a tourist style wall hanger. i'm trying to find a way to make a new pvc sheath out of it, but i need a press that can cover about 30".

my pride and joy of the entire collection is the 20" siru, perfect for de-limbing.

If you want a kydex sheath, make one like Rob Criswell uses for his Katana. Here's a quick and very poor pic of mine. It's made in 4 segments about 8" long, and put together with screws. If you want to make one, I'll take better pics and send them to you. Oh and if you really hate the Katana, maybe we could trade something?

i dont hate it, i was just a little suprised at its condition when it arived. the blade was also bent visibly.

as far as knives go, for me, ya gotta have some basics...
multitool pliers (leathman for me)
edc fixed blade, something strong enough to take heavy abuse, but acute
enough to perform well at cutting tasks (busse basic 5 for me)
a bag knife, something around 9" in the blade, a prybar that can cut (basic 9)
(these two are optoinal, thin cutting folder (bm 710), and dedicated prybar (Busse NIP))
a wood chopper/splitter (26.5/30" ang khola)
a large blade for de-limbing and cutting up small tree's (20" sirupati)
and a katana (HI carved handle everest katana)

(   )

it just needs a lot of work is all. id use a 20" chitlangi, gs, ww2, bas, super saylan, ff, or ycs a whole lot more then the katana, but the idea of not having the katana in the collection is a little weird to think about... it fills a gap that cant really be filled by anything else (besides another katana/odachi)

thanks for the sheath idea :)
