kinda disappointed....

I was thinking about replacing my 10 year old AFCK and tried out a friends Grip, it was okay but I'll just stick with the AFCK. Wish they still made the original.

Yep another one disappointed with his griptilian, for me though it's really only the scales i'm not happy with.

The knife itself is fantastic and has taken some real abuse without any problems.
I went for the Doug Ritter version and it keeps an edge well but isn't to bad to sharpen either.

Ended up ordering some custom scales, so we'll see how it goes from there.

Cheers

This used to happen to me every time I bought a Spyderco. The ergos never felt right when I was just holding it. I would have some buyers remorse and then it would finally make it's way into my pocket and I would use it and things would click. Now I know to just go cut something as soon as I take it out of the box.

i have a totally different experience i would say use it abuse it in fact beat the sh**** out of it and you will like it more dont think of hey i am using this knife now or whatever just do tasks and you will grow to love the axis the feel just about everything

Some years back I went to the local B&M and was looking at a mini grip. When I told the owner I'd like to buy one he told me that for a few bucks more I could have a Sequel. Never regretted allowing myself to be upsold.

The knife I grew to appreciate is my amber bone Case Texas Jack. The patina and feel of the natural scales won me over.

I've had mine for about a year and a half now. Under whelmed with it, but I got it before the prices on them skyrocketed. I wouldn't buy one now. They are not an $80-90 knife in any way. I love Benchmades, just not my grip.

A couple of years back, I received my order of a ZDP-189 Endura. I held it for a minute, then re-boxed it and sent it back. At that time, I couldn't stand it because it lacked a finger choil. FF to 2011 and I ordered another one. This time it felt comfortable and like an extension of my hand, in fact, it is one of my favorite knives.

I also purchased this knife some time ago because of all the hype and wasn't that impressed with it. That being said... I still have it for some reason (haven't traded it, etc.).

A few things I didn't really like about it:
1. The handle feels cheap... almost just too light or plastic.
2. The pocket clip is somewhat small and tight
3. It just feels like a little bit too small in general... (I did by the Griptillian mini... so perhaps that should be very expected... I amy really like the larger version).

I do like the lock and the blade is very sharp.

I picked a mini-grip last year and liked it except for the mini part..It was so small to me I couldent open it with one hand..I liked the blade and the lock but i was a bit iffy on the handles..Not a deal breaker though..Maybe Ill try a full size grip and see what happens..

if i get a knife & im not that crazy about it from the beginning, its downhill from there.

What makes the grip a bargain for $80? It has plastic handles and a 154cm blade. Sure its cheap for a benchmade but it's not exactly a bargain either IMO. I bought two grips, one regular and one mini. I gave away the full size and the mini sits in a drawer collecting dust. Just wasn't for me I guess, but I will say I liked the full size more. A Ritter grip would probably be more to my liking, but the handle is a little fat feeling and isn't great in the pocket.

I sort of know what you mean. I have had several knives that I was initially disappointed with that really grew on me.

The Griptillian is a great knife, but I think $80 is on the high end for what Is essentially BM's bargain basement folder. While nice, it is not in my opinion appreciably better than many other knives that sell for less.

I was a big fan of my Fixed blade Griptillian though, which I can understand being around $80 since it used much much more of the 154CM steel, and took more grinding / machining time to make ... but the folders? No way.

I wish everyone had the opportunity to handle/fondle the limited edition Griptilian because the sculptured carbon fiber handle quickly ends any discussion about feelings of quality. It's definitely the most comfortable, ergonomic knife I've handled. What would be awesome would be a mini version...

^That^ Grip , yea :)

The stock version , no. The sole reason I no longer own one is because the cheap -not solid - feeling the handles have.

I do not blame the OP a bit for his 'meh' feeling.

Tostig

p.s. planetcat hit it spot on , they are quite overpriced considering materials. Were talking stock here , by the way.

I may be outnumbered here, but I really appreciate the the hollow plastic feel of the handle. Super comfortable, no metal or paint to scratch, light... Never found the handle to be a con, but to each his own.

Congrats on buying your first Benchmade and its made here in the USA. BM Grips are not what I would call pretty but they work.

I've never been crazy about my mini grip 557, I just keep it around because it was my first $50+ knife.

I have a BM 550 and I really like the knife. The knife is both solid and well built and it's very comfortable in my hand.

The only thing I will say in the negative is that for the level of materials used, the knife is pretty high up in it's price point.

after all the hype i heard about this knife, I was dissapointed in it when I went down to outdoor world and checked one out in person. I never did buy it cuz I just couldn't really see anything I liked about it. I just don't think its worth the money and its far from an end all that most people talk about. Give me a thin, light weight, large, and strong folder which is worth the money and I'll show you a winner. perhaps if this blade was like 1/4 the price, I might kick it around but i think there are so many other knifes out there which could and will do better.
