KMG Grinder/Beaumont Metal Works Problems

Sounds like their customer service has taken a down turn.

This could have been avoided if Beaumont sold assembled/working grinders rather than a collection of untested parts the user must assemble.

Good point..I have a KMG with a KB drive as well. It has worked flawless . But when you assemble everything you still have to wire the VFD and that's were things can go wrong. Lots of people have no problem doing this but plenty are intimidated with anything electrical. And for good reason. There are several adjustments and jumpers in the box that you have to navigate through and not saying he wired it wrong or anything because in his post he states he has other equipment he has and uses but lots of things can go wrong.

Maybe KMG could ask the customer what power source they wanted 220/110 and set up the basic settings and go from there. I'm sure they would say something like to keep cost down we have to do it this way. Who knows what happened. But I hope the OP gets everything sorted out and get back to grinding.

I have been involved with electronics since I was a kid, including building my own oscilloscope and a computer before I was in high school. I am also a licensed architect and know my way around power systems quite well. I can handle following printed/illustrated directions, moving a few jumpers and making power connections - the setup on the KMG is really not that complicated!

I agree it would be nice if KMG offered a setup or pretest, but that wouldn't have mattered in this case since the grinder and VFD worked flawlessly for a while then quit on me.

Update: KMG has been helpful - they had the distributor for the VFD call me directly and promise to do what they could to expedite the evaluation at KB electronics. I am talking with KMG about buying a horizontal grinder and a few step pulleys. That would allow me to run the 2x72 as a three speed in the short term; I can move the new motor over to the horizontal grinder when my VFD comes back from KB.

Win/win. They will have a happy customer and I will have yet another new tool/toy.

Myself and a colleague have both experiences customer service issued with BMW (ordering, pricing, shipping). I will not buy from them again.

One of my KBAC 29 vfds blew up while it was TURNED OFF a day or two after I got it. I had a terrible experience with KBs warranty dept. Just warning you, stay on them and bug the crap out of them or nothing will get done. Document everything. I got basically interrogated by their warranty guy who told me it was impossible for it to blow up while turned off....clearly not. They couldn't find the cause of the problem after 2 weeks of inspections so they made up a bogus story that there was debris in it and it wasnt under warranty.

Luckily electricmotor wholesale stepped up and replaced it--- seriously great guys.

I purchased a ONE WAY Wood Lathe with VFD a few years back & the manufacturer told me at least half a dozen times, "UNPLUG IT WHEN NOT IN USE". They even suggested installing a pull-out type disconnect you see on exterior portion of air conditioning units. They said they had several that they had to warranty that the customer swore up and down were not in use when they were damaged.

I am about to make a grinder purchase.. Wanted the VFD set up but my father keeps chirping in saying the more electronics the more chance of running into problems downs the road.. I think I will end up with the step pulleys.. Especially if it is tough getting warranty/ replacement on the kbac
