KMG Grinder; to paint or not

Today, I am the proud owner of a KMG 2hp variable speed and I'm curious if I should paint it before getting it set up. The logical side of me says yes, due to the bare metal and the fact it doesn't take much to form surface rust.

If I should, can anyone recommend what I should use and or how? Thanks in advance for your help.

I painted mine a grey color, and I'm glad I did. Mask off the bearings/shafts/sheaves, and go for it. If you like the look of the bare metal, get a good flat clear coat and put a protective layer over it.

mine is still browning out i ahve had it 3 years and have not got the nice total brown/rust all finnished yet (your not plannnning on leaving it wet in the shop are you)
i let dust sit on the grinder all the time and neve r have a problem with "rust" its jsut takign its time getting a nice brown oxide layer

...just rub it down with boiled linseed oil to keep that sweet steel finish that can never be scratched.

I did not paint mine to make it easier to weld on the fender flares and chrome exhaust tips when I start making the BIG bucks from my knives... if I ever finish them. -Doug

I sprayed mine with some Rustoleum I had sitting around. It only took a minute and now I don't have to worry. :)

Congrats and I took a look at your bio. I have never been to W Viginia but if it has humidty like NW Florida then I would say yes. It may never get but a light brown but why not protect it!

Took my KMG all of two weeks to rust like crazy. My shop is at sea level, 6 blocks to the Pacific. Paint costs less than sandpaper.

FedEx made the decision for me. It was delivered on a rainy day and left in a puddle instead of on the large, covered, dry front porch.

I got mine last week and decided not to paint it. If the rust gets bad I'll sand it down and clear coat it.

I did not paint mine. No rust yet, but it is just a 1 month old. If it did not not start rusting during the winter (when it rains here), I guess it should be fine the rest of the year. I started using it within a week after I got it and it it now covered with a thin layer of dust, which probably protects it.

David66, Fedex made 3 attempts to deliver my KMG, because they required a signature. I am surprised they just left yours.

I'd call and complain like crazy. That's completely unacceptable from any delivery service, let alone the one that claims to be the best in the business.

I can hardly believe my eyes, this is a thread about KMG, there are 19 posts so far, and still no pictures...

I did it this way...I did it that way...bla, bla, bla......:jerkit:

Pictures or it didn't happen! :D
